Dana 30

I'm curious how many people run a locker in there Dana 30 and if you recommend it.

I have an ARB up front and love it. It is worth every cent. I will be using it a lot when I make it to Moab for the Safari in 2 days.

will the front locker effect my dana 35 in the back...I plan on getting a 44 this summer once i get the cash but i wanted to lock the front for now.

I'm currently looking at the Aussie Locker for my D30... its inexpensive and relatively easy to install.

They work fine, but there are trade offs. harder to make sharp turns off road, in some cases. if you see snow driving, not the best choice as it will making steering harder. As in fits in the case its weaker than the one such as arb that replace the carrier. I ran one in a tj and it was fine. I also ran an ARB and that was nicer as I could turn it off and on as needed. Current setup is aussie in the front as this was a low budget build.

I run the stock HP dana 30 in my YJ, but with 4.56 gears Eton E locker, 30spline molly shafts and heavy 37 12.50 humvee tires/wheels. The one down side is the stupid hubs they wear out quickly on mine. Other then that its a very good axle. My suggestion if you want to lock it and not upgrade the shafts dont go bigger then 35's.

Yeah, I read the pro's and cons regarding the Aussie - Snow sucks, sharp turns could be a problem, but since this isn't my DD, and we don't get much snow where I'm at, I think it's a going to work well - not to mention fit into my budget until I can get an E-locker.

I run a ox locker with 30 spline chromoly yukon shafts and 35s with no problems...

I don't have to worry about snow here in Texas haha I think I'm going to go ahead and do it this summer..haven't heard to many complaints. thanks for the info

Snow only sucks of you use 4wd. I went the whole winter and never had to use it once. If its bad enough to use it then there is enough snow on the road for the locker to not affect it. You have to be smart. That's with an auto locker of course. I really like my Aussie up front. She sure pulls a lot better.

if I decide to get the Aussie up front how do I know which one to get...what exactly is spline????

You should have a d30. And there is only one type per type of locker. Just decide what you want. If your getting a selectable there might be a different model based on gearing but the carrier break is so low you shouldn't have t worry. What are you gears. And yes splines are what dark showed. Basically how any little ridges on the end. The more there are the more surface area is touching so they are stronger or something like that. More splines is generally stronger.

There is a spline count to axle shaft diameter ratio that will determine what's the strongest for that particular diameter off axle shaft.. As was said you want more surface area without compromising the strength of the individual splines.. Too many on too small of a shaft won't be as strong as fewer but thicker splines on the same size shaft

But the side gears in the differential are what accept the splines, which is why spline count matters in a locker, they are designed to accept a certain spline count axle shaft

Yep dark answered again last I checked theres only one d30 Aussie. I didn't look at many others. I'm not sure I think there is one brand that makes a bigger spline count shaft for the 35. Alloy I believe. As for the d30 I'm not sure.

Yes Aussie only has one Dana 30 locker...I was looking at a spartan locker I think..I also read that the lock rite is decent...which brand would you prefer Aussie or Lock rite...this is my DD but I go out every weekend.

IMO either one is good. I have heard thenlockeifht is good but I love my Aussie.

I'm currently running a lockright in my d30 and a Spartan in the d35 rear. The lockright is great now that it's broken in and loosened up some, only noticable in tight turns at low speed such as parking lots.
I would replace your universal joints (front axle) while the axles are out , if yours are week they will fail (mine failed) in short order after the locker install.

what size tires are you running ...and yea I read that pretty much all front lockers click on tight turns!!

I have a buddy that wanted to add a locker to his d35 and he has 31s...would you recommend doing it...he just doesn't want to break his axle.
