Dana 44 front axle (216 FBI) cross shaft

Hey there all, this is my first real forum experience so if my etiquette isn't 100% please feel free to politely let me know.

So anyways, I have an 04 TJ Rubicon that I did axle seals on this weekend. (Dana 44/216 FBI with Tru-Lock). While I had the differential assembly on the bench I noticed the cross shaft or center pin retaining pin is loose and slides freely inside the diff case and the cross shaft. Because of the diff cases contour the pin cannot completely slide out (if it could, i probably would have learned it was loose the hard way......kaboom!!!). Jeep only sells the entire diff case assembly(locker, spider gears, cross shaft, ect.) for a measly $1800.00. At $1800.00 my logic 'says make it work'. So I was wondering if anyone else has run across this and come up with a creative fix or even knows how the retaining pin is removed. In the pictures you can see the end of the cross shaft or center pin between the ring gear teeth. Gravity alone is enough to allow the retaining pin to slide, in the second pic I'm holding the retaining pin up in it's correct position. Thanks for any help you can offer.

Try re-posting the pics so we can see exactly what you're talking about

Sorry, I didn't realize there was a problem with the pics. They're there when I view the thread. I'll try to fix it in a bit.

I really would like to at least try to help you, but the pictures are very small now (like thumbnails) & I can't make them bigger.

Is that the roll pin for the pinion shaft ? I haven't messed around with an axle like that before.

It's not a roll pin.

It serves the same purpose as a roll pin but it's a solid hardened pin instead. It retains the cross shaft in the differential case.

Okay that's what I thought, same difference. But are you saying that it only has a hole for the pin on one side of the carrier and not the other. And that it should stick halfway out not entirely out right? I'm sorry I haven't ever seen the carrier your workin on. You could try to add some grease to it to help keep it in place. I guess your just concerned that with enough force it will come out?
