Dash Malfunction

So tonight I was driving home from work and I was sitting at a red light. The dash backlights all go off like the Jeep turns off but I could still hear it running. Then it acts like its starting back up and gives the check gauges noise and runs as good as ever on the way home. Any ideas as to what this might be? Im no mechanic but my first guess was something to do with the computer. I would appreciate any other advice/thoughts.

check your grounds connections. They are located just inside the tub in front of the drivers door.

This is a common problem of early tj's. The connections are dirty or loose on the back of the dash . Remove the dash and unhook the 2 connectors. Clean them up with contact cleaner, apply dielectric grease and re-assemble.
