dash vents

I have a 98 wrangler with air and am wondering when or if the dash vents are supposed to do anything. The 2 small side window defrost vents work but the larger ones do not and i'm wondering which setting they should. the previous owner had the center dash off(changed radio, added/hard wired xm radio) and screwed up the top screw holes and the defrost vent peice is sitting kinda funkey(but works-good) the selector(vent) seems to work fine otherwise(changes location of heat/air and can hear it moving around) just no or extreemly little air out of the center dash vents reguardless of setting.
thanks

Well if it is like mine; there is a valve (for lack of a better word) under the dash that is broken. Pull the cover off under the stearing collom and look to see if it's working or snaped. changing out the radio will do it if you're not very careful.

Mrhog is correct. Check the dash to make sure everything is correct. Could also be vacuum issue or controls. Here's a thread for the vacuum lines. When there is a leak, it defaults to the defroster vent and sometimes the cruise fails.

Robbiecc,

I started a thread a few weeks back relating to this same issue I had with my 02 V6. I went though hell trying to figure out what the issue was. I finally found the issue and it turned out to be a vaccum leak. I will try and post a link to the thread. It was a 3.48 fix. I also posted pics of the location. Good luck and holler if you have any questions.

AW

The vaccum lines are located on the drivers side by the fire wall on my 02. Not sure about yours. I hope this helps!

thanks all so far-will look around tomarrow.
reread my 1st post and maybe i should add that the selector switch works fine, the floor, defrost and the 2 side window(small vents) all work just fine-just the dash ones don't seem to do much(never have worked since i've owned the jeep)

UPDATE

pulled out the FSM and found the problem. evidently when the PO took the dash apart and changed radio/added XM, when he stuffed everything back in he snipped the vacum hose. took the drivers side apart to make sure one of the arms didn't fall off or break. then started it(need compressor running) and switched through the settings and all but 1 worked. since the floor and dash actuators are the same i swapped the hoses and surprize, dash actuator worked(tells me it a vacum hose-somewhere) then dropped the glove box to disconnect the vacum harness and there it was-little peice on the connector and the rest just hanging loose. couldn't get the small peice out so i cut the 'union' hose and used what was left. started it up, ran through the settings and all worked. put it all back together paying careful attention to how/where i stuffed the xm radio parts. now i'm a happy little jeepster waiting for a reason to go somewhere and see how much better the air works now that it's comming out of where it's suppose to and not the floor/defrosters.
