Decent, cheap winch?

It's that time, guys. Trying to keep it sub-$400, cheaper is ALWAYS better. Don't want to end up with a piece of crap that burns out while I'm up to my fender flares in mud, though.

What do YOU recommend? Remember, this is just a starter. I can go bigger later

EDIT: Heck, why not toss in front bumper assemblies for that sucker, too? I'll probably need it anyways (total winch n00b here).

Good cheap winch............ Check out "MileMarker"

I would go for Ramsey but that is about as far away from cheap as bill gates.

Thanks for the quick reply!

I guess I'll toss in a request for pro/cons of hydraulic and electrics while I'm at it. Thanks again for the help!

There are a bunch of winches out there nowadays in the 300-400 mark.

MileMarker
Smittybuilt
Bulldog

Those three are all cheap, Just do some serious research now and you will find out what one fits your style.

Another thing to think about is if you are going to buy an Electric or a Hydraulic Winch. I am not going to touch that topic with a 10 foot pole haha, that is purely preference the both have there ups and downs about them.

Some swear upon electric winches, and some swear upon hydro's. I would get a 9,500 winch either way. Electrics run off the battery so you got to make sure you got a good battery or youll kill it where it stands, it requires a few minutes of HEAVY battery usage. Look into Optima batterys.... Hydro winches require the jeep to be running so if you are unable to start it example- in deep water, or put it on its side you might not be going anywhere.

I got the Milemarker sec9500 and are happy with it but they are slow compared to higher end winches.

Dang, that's ridiculous! Kinda reminds me of how I got this jeep
Doubt I'll see anything like that, but I'd definitely go for it.

A wee bit outta the price range, but I'll give it some consideration.

From the sound of your description I'd probably grab a deep-cycle battery and an electric winch, just in case. Good info though!

Wish I could rep you guys, but they don't have that here

How about this one? http://www.warn.com/truck/winches/VR8000_winch.shtml

I've heard good stuff about Warn, and this is close to my budget.

Well I have nothing bad to say about the bumper our winch plate.the finish is good despite the things I've read too.I would rebuy either of them if I was in a situation that required it.I paid $ 399 for the winch @ orscheln's

Something else to look at, Synthetic line instead of wire cable. No kinks, no rust, no wire splinters, stronger and lighter then metal.

Smitty XRC 8, it works and is better than what you pay for it.

I've had my Smitty xrc8 since Christmas. It has saved me and many others tons of times. Smitty might suck at making other things for jeeps, but they did a great job on this winch. You cant beat the price either. I recommend it. My 0.02.

A few month back with picked up the Smittybilt XRC10 (10,000 pound) winch off of Amazon for $350 delivered to the door. I use it with a receiver hitch mount that I bolted to the top plate of my aftermarket bumper.....I don't care to haul the extra 100+ pounds out front of my TJ all the time.

Warns new VR series is in the same price range and still has their lifetime warranty.
