demagnetize axle housing?

I'm building a HPD30. I'm drilling holes in the axle tubes to weld in inner axle sleeves. As I am drilling the holes I notice everything is magnetized. I have metal shavings from the drilling stuck to the axle tubes, drill bit, center punch, etc.

Is this normal? How do I go about demagnetizing everything. I have an AC/DC Lincoln stick welder, so I could wrap the housing with the electrode cable. What polarity would I want?

Yes this is normal especially when you are using a drill. Do not worry about it as it will go away. Since you are drilling everything you are creating small metal shavings that should be removed before you seal everything up. Use a magnet and pull out any of the small slivers before you seal it up.
