Unhappy Desperately seeking opinions

Hey guys,

So I finally got my wrangler a few days ago, absolutely love it. We have 10 inches of snow coming this afternoon so I may even be able to try her out even more today.

Here is my dilemma.

I put my tires and wheel onto her yesterday. 235-75R15. Nothing too crazy along with American Racing ( AR-23 ) rims.

I put them on with my dad in his home garage yesterday. He had the machine to put them on ( name of it passes me by ). It seems legit, maybe a little smaller then the ones you see in a tire shop. So we tightened everything up and I was off for the day.

I'm on my way home getting off the highway ( about 30 miles in ). I get off the exit ramp and BOOM.... front passenger tires flies off. Luckily I maneuvered over to the side of the road. I was able to retrieve the tire ( no lug nuts found ).

So I took the lug nuts from the original tires that were on the jeep and put the tire back on and drive over to Pep Boys. After about an hour and a half the guy tells me that I should get open ended lug nuts because they go further down the post and there wasn't a huge amount of room to put the lug nuts on. He then goes and tells me my rotors are shot as well and he requested that those be replaced. He told me the reason that this prob happened was that we didn't tighten that wheel enough. He ends the conversation telling me that he wouldn't drive it too far or much with the way the posts and lug nuts are.

Today I decided to call Town Fair Tire. I purchased the rims and tires through these guys and they seem to be more experienced then the pep boys guys. First thing the guy tells me is the rims and tires will fit the wrangler fine and there should not be a problem at all. Same thread, everything. I told him how the pep boys guy said the open ended would go down further on the post and latch on better. He responded by telling me that didn't make any sense and it was not true. He said it had to be that we didn't tighten the wheel enough and that everything should be fine with it. He told me to come down to the shop and they would check it out / tighten it up. This whole checking it out process literally lasted 3 minutes and they said I was good to go.

So now Pep Boys and Town Fair have tightened the wheels up. Town fair says I am ready to go and fine, while Pep is saying I should get open ended lug nuts.

The only thing I noticed is the "posts" for the lug nuts on the ranger were longer than the one on the Jeep. The guy told me the lug nut only needs to turn 6 times for it to be fastened on there. It had to of turned more than that. Is there anything I can put on the lug nuts or spray on them to make them even more fastened?

What do you guys think? Should I scrap the idea of these tires and rims and just put the stock ones back on? The experience of that tire shooting off is not one I want to go through again. I want to feel safe in this thing. If it happened on the highway I probably would not be typing right now. Do I look at it like it was not tightened right the first time and move on without worrying about it?

Sorry for the long post and thanks,

A brand new and very worried jeep owner!

You should be fine. I don't think I'd ever trust a place like Pep Boys. The tire shop is very adept at this kind of thing and if they torqued them down for you then you probably good to go. Odds are your stock lug nuts will be fine with your wheels. I've never personally seen any AR rims that were odd shaped enough to need ET lugs etc. However if you want to be more sure you can find some of what's called an ET lug nut it more of an Extended Thread version. I'm not sure of the exact Wrangler lug thread but I know it's half inch.

ya, pep boys are a bunch of idiots, not all tire shops are good either, but if you know this is a reputable tire shop then trust them. a good idea would be to go back to them in about 50 miles or so and have them checked and retorqued. if they were fine, then you have no worries.

Thanks a lot guys...

I think I may order the ET lug nuts just to be safe. I will have them shipped here in a couple days and then I will bring her in to the tire shop and checked out anyway.

Thanks!
