4.0 revealed

I just put 18/59 springs shocks on my 4.0 sahara with AC, no other accessories. I got 3.25" in the rear. Only got 1.25" in the front. Had to put 1.75" coil spacers up front to level the rake. Also had to do a transfer case drop as the vibrations were awful from the lift. I used BSE to modify the bump stop cup in the rear. Swapping the mounts in the springs in the front was a total biotch. Took over two hours for just the front shock modification. Everything else was pretty straight forward. I also did the grinding of the shocks in the rear instead of trying to widen the frame mount. A much better idea if you ever decide to go back to stock tj parts. The next guy will definitely thank you for it.

I also put on the stock 32" BFG mud terrains (255/75 r17) and 17" rims from the 2012 JK rubicon.
With the new parts i now have the rear fender sitting almost 6" higher than where it was last week.

Ok, sorry if I'm late to the discussion, but it seems the general consensus is that JKU Springs (regardless of spring rate) only provide lift for 2.5L Tj's, not 4.0L TJ's. Sorry, I'm just looking for a cheap lift for my 2000 4.0L TJ. Thanks

Thumbs up jku suspension on 97 tj

i am in the process of installing this type of suspension lift on my 97 tj i got the parts off kijiji from a 09 jku hoping it works out well as i have 33's that i want to put on will try to upload pics when completed.....thanks

Hey guys, I'm buying a full suspension from a stock JK sport. The guy says the springs end with either 14 or 16, and then 58. Also comes with shocks. Only 20 bucks, so I've got nothing to lose. I also have a 1998, 2.5L TJ SE, no big add ons like heavy bumpers or winches. Any idea how well this will work out? I'm riding on stock suspension already.

I have a 2001 sahara automatic 4.0 with a 2" BB and a soft top. I'm picking up shocks and springs for $15 tomorrow off of a JK. Not sure what part number or model of JK, but it's $15, and worst case scenario, I get a nicer ride with the JK shocks. I also have a smittybilt SRC bumper and a/c.

I've come to understand that the front will more than likely be lower than the back if I change out all the springs and shocks, especially due to the specs of my jeep. My plan is to install the shocks first by themselves. See how it rides. After that, I'll more than likely put the springs on if I can figure them out, specifically the back springs because I don't know if it's better to heat and stretch them or buy bump stop extensions. If it turns out I get 17's or other not-as-stiff springs for the front and it's a lot lower than the back, I'll put my 2" BB on the front (unless if that makes it higher than the back). Posting pictures as I go, of course.

And if it doesn't somehow lift my jeep 3"+, I won't need to replace anything else really.

Does this all sound plausible to you guys?

I had seen early in this thread a fellow asked for a installed JK spring measurement . I never did see the answer posted . I did see some losing height some gaining height by swapping to the JK springs. Some of you are replacing very old OE TJ springs that are no doubt not sitting at their original height to begin with which makes the JK spring lift amounts vary and what others will end up with lift wise just a guess. I have not seen it mentioned as of yet or maybe I missed it . Any way the OE when new TJ springs installed are 8" tall in the rear and 12" tall in the front . Knowing that , you can now measure your installed JK springs and post the measurement and members can maybe better determine how much actual lift and you can also determine how much your previous springs may of been sagging to get a better handle on where you were and where you actually are after .

Just measured my zj spring swap and front springs moved to the rear if anyone's interested its 14 3/4 in the front 10 1/2 in the rear

Which ZJ coils and are they new at that measurement? Where the front coils moved to the back new also? I'm looking at getting new OEM coils to replace my sagging ones but might do this instead.

Any zj with a v8 the front coils, and yes my front stock spring(2004) was moved to the rear
I also just put on stock jk rubicon shocks but did run my stock tj shocks for awhile with no issues

So my tj stock rear shocks are leaking. Can I replace them with the stock jk shocks without installing the springs? I feel like length would be an issue

They might limit travel on stock suspension. Their fully compressed length is around 1.5" longer than stock tj shocks.

A body lift has no effect on the suspension whatsoever.

I'm just a little confused as to how there being 2 more inches from the axle to the body doesn't expand the distance from the bottom and top shock mounts

Upper mounts for the shocks aren't attached to the body; they are attached to the frame. The measurement from axle to frame unaffected with a body lift. The extra space is between the frame and the body when you install a body lift; above the suspension assembly.

Anyway, I'm not sure if I posted in here before but I put ZJ v8 springs in the front, which got me about an inch and a half on a 2003 4.0. I imagine less tired front springs would probably give you about 2 inches. I installed new crown Victoria springs on the rear which got me 2 inches. I then installed 1 inch spacers in the front so now I'm sitting with 2.5 inches front, 2 inches rear. I believe (hope) this will be sufficient to stuff my 33's under it next week. They're only 9.5's, and I'm also willing to trim the fender flares if need be.

I would have probably liked an extra inch both front and back, but I think I may have got away with this lift without any extra vibes *without* even lowering the TC.

Ok guys I have been researching this for roughly a month and read this thread 4 or 5 times. I have a question for the guys that have done this. I have an 02 Sahara A/C ,5sp. I have JKU fronts 17 /rears 59 springs and shocks. My questions are what size coil spacer should a run in the front to give me a level stance? What size bump stops should I use? In your educated opinion will 33s fit, if so should there be any consideration to the backspace of the wheel ( 16" rubicon moabs). Also I will be using BPE opposed to to pressing the bar pins out and reusing them. Thanks for the help please don't beat me too bad for beating this dead horse.

2014 JKUR (auto/manual and hard/soft top unknown, but I will check)

Rear Springs - 68004460AA (x2) (first time I have seen anyone mentioning 60s)
Front Springs - 52126318AC (x2)

Shocks -
186AC OE 17226 05168186AC (x2)
188AC OE 17227 05168188AC (x2)

I just craigslisted these yesterday. 2014, two weeks old, ten (10) miles on them!

I have a 2003 Sport, soft top, AC. It already has a really mediocre and old lift of (at least) three inches. It is old, though, so it could have been higher at one time.

It has no driveline vibes with a 2" TC drop. (Yeah, that will get corrected. Someday...)

The ride is rough. There are no stickers on anything. I am guessing the shocks and springs are Skyjacker based on the ride, but they also could be very old Ranchos that are shot. Does not really matter.

I am considering doing all in the rear and just the shocks in the front. Does this sound like a decent solution? How will the ride on the road be with the stiff springs but the JKUR shocks?

I will try to swap the front springs, too. I will post photos of everything as I go with a 48" ruler next to obvious benchmarks for comparison.

I like my lift height. I do not like the ride. I hate that it is in such bad condition and so old. This set of shocks will make me happier, and the springs might, too. I am hoping so.

Any comments on my listed part numbers? I think the 60s in the back should be interesting. Note that all these parts have been around for a while now and are up to AC on the 2014s, meaning that these are the third different supplier. The 60s are AA parts, meaning from the initial supplier. This seems to confirm that these are indeed new springs on the rear ends of JKs. Just wish we could get something like a 21 for the front ends, lol...

If I swap the front springs, I will be sure to do it after everything else has been swapped first, and will take photos to show what happens.

Not looking forward to pressing out the stuff for the front shocks.

And this Sport has a lot of bolts that were not torqued properly and are also rusted. I have broken off a lot of heads swapping bumpers and such. Today I replaced my steering damper and getting the old one off required a breaker bar for the entire removal and replacement; tight as hell. I set my torque wrench to 200 ft lbs and it clicked almost immediately when I tried to remove the axle bolt. The spec is 55 ft lbs. Nice guy, that PO.

EDIT: Please note that my front springs have the same PN for both R & L sides. Also, the 60s appeared at least in 2013 models. Maybe earlier. Funny no one has come across them yet.

Had a great deal of trouble undoing my freaking shock bolts, finally deciding to cut off the old fronts and to leave the rears for later. The lower, large bolts came free on both, but the dang upper four are stuck good. I soaked them with PB Blaster three times today for about 20 to 30 minutes and used my acetylene torch on them a little bit. Still stuck. So I will keep doing this for a few days and hope that they eventually break free. I do NOT want to have to remove broken screws from those particular locations!

So the fronts are on and we tested them. Hard to tell since the rears still blow. But there was a noticeable difference. I cannot wait to see how all four feel.

Of note, none of my four shocks even worked. None. All were dead as doornails. Fluid in them sloshed around that it sounded like a half empty thermos bottle when I set them on the slab. They no longer expand at all. Look at them in the photos. They are compressed fully and do not expand whatsoever. Sad. So this will be a major upgrade for me. We will be keeping our current front springs but using the 60s in the rear. I will get OME springs and then level what I end up with.

This was a major PITA to do. We really had to scratch our heads to make the modifications to the front shocks work and had to use the breaker bars far too much; I am sore as after my honeymoon! (We do not own a press, so we had to get creative with our bench vice, some sockets and screwdrivers to get the old bar pins and the new tubes out or their bushings and the old bar pins into the new bushings.

I only hurt myself once. Not bad. Miller time!

I don't know if anyone went over this or not, but could the bump stops from a jk bolt up to the tj to eliminate the need for heating up the rear coils?

was cruising another site and they had linked to this mod. I am still doing this mod on just about every TJ I get now. So it works and rides so much better. I got a local 4x4 shop that gives me every thing so cost wise its worth every penny. I know its a pain to mod the shocks and the rear spring. But then you really feel like you did something and not just bolted on a kit. Well thanks for all those that keep this post alive. I had pics on here but they got deleted..

The shock mounts aren't really all that bad, if you have a press. I was done in under an hour.

What did you end up using a press for? Bushings? I found it much much easier to get a bar pin eliminator kit and use an angle grinder to squeeze in the lower mounts. Couldn't tell ya how much I took off, but ya had to do it front and back as opposed to bending the mounts (for the rear) or messing around with the bushing(front).
