I used Permatex Ultra-Black RTV for years without problem or leaks. Mopar RTV is even better and Permatex has a newer RTV specifically made for gear lube which can be harsh on some RTVs The only gasket I would use is a Lube-Locker which is a multiple-use gasket that works well. I actually switched away from RTV to the Lube-Locker a year or two ago and so far, I like it and it's certainly a lot easier than having to clean the old RTV off and re-apply it every time you need to pull the cover.

Skip the RTV and use a lube locker. Saves a lot of time and they're reusable. Completely worth the $20 or whatever they cost.

I use a window scraper on my diffs and it takes around 2 minutes to remove the old RTV without any damage to the sealing surface. I prefer using RTV - it is dirt cheap and I have never had a problem with leaks. Permatex and Loctite RTV arw both very good but I used Eagle Star high temp RTV, around $2 a tube, on both my diffs and my transmission and have been very happy.
