Difference between strapless and header bikini

I've looked all over but I can't find what the difference between the Bestop strapless bikini and header bikini is. I know the strapless requires the drill-in header and the header requires the quick detach header, is that the only difference or is the actual bikini top different in some way?

Which one do you think would be best for me? I plan on putting it on in the spring when its warm enough and leaving it on till fall. I have a soft top and would completely remove it from the Jeep.

Thanks for the help!

A strapless bikini top refers to the fact that there are no straps going from the tail-end of the top to the rails on the body (tailgate area). The only difference is a no-drill header vs drill-in header. I currently have the no-drill header just so I can easily swap out tops.

Ohhh! Ohhhh!! I know this one!!

Actually, TJWhosYourMama's answer is really good. But a few other points, since I'm getting paid for this:

The original Bikini® had straps running to the back corner. At some distant point in the past, we came out with the Strapless (which still has straps, actually, but they're hidden).

This classic "strapless" Bikini® is really mostly for CJs and YJs, although it will go with TJs up to 02. It uses an inexpensive classic windshield channel, like all CJs use. You need to drill this into your windshield.

Since MOST people wanted a more convenient windshield channel, we came out with the Header Bikini. But since some people still wanted the other style, we still sell them.

So should I go with the header bikini and no-drill header since I will want to put my soft top up for the winter? Gets mighty cold here in South Dakota for just a bikini top

No, they'll conflict.

The soft top comes with its own header, either ours or the factory model.
The factory one is easier to remove, and stays with the top. Ours is used for Supertops, Bikini's, etc. It bolts to the windshield, and is more difficult to remove, but not hard.

I think you've stumbled on one of the reasons for keeping the old style, drill-in header around: it's cheaper. We can sell someone a Bikini and header combo for a lot less money that way. But I personally don't think it's worth it. Even for you South Dakotans who only get Bikini weather from July 15th to August 3rd.

MOPAR sells a top that uses the soft top header. BUT remember that your soft top is screwed onto the header with a bunch of little screws. It's really designed to be "permanently" attached to the header.

So it's best to buy a whole new header.

The good news with that is it means you can pick from any of the aftermarket Bikini's ® or similar out there

TRIVIA: did you know that Bestop has a registered trademark for Bikini® ? We're the only company that sells them. Everyone else has a different name, like Sun Bonnet, or Sun Cap. This is a great thing, because I wouldn't want to spend my days typing up copy for Sun Bonnets.

I don't know if this is actually as confusing as it seems or if I'm just an idiot, but I still am as confused as I originally was and I have no idea what I should get. Sorry if I'm an idiot, I must be having an off day

Thanks!!! As you maybe can tell, I am new to Jeeps. My Jeep has a hard top on it and the soft top came with it, but have only owned it for 4 weeks. Never put a soft top on it and didn't know the soft top header screwed on.

Too much history and background, and not enough answers, huh? Try this:

You have a 97 Wrangler? You've got choices.

1. You can buy a strapless Bikini. It will need a drill-in style windshield channel. This is cheapest, but less convenient.

2. You can buy a Header-Style Bestop Bikini. This will require a Bestop TJ windshield channel. This bolts onto your windshield channel.

3. You can buy a Mopar Sun Bonnet (or whatever Mopar calls them). This will require a Mopar factory-style windshield channel. This latches on, and is the most convenient. And the most expensive.

4. You can buy a Bikini-style top from other manufacturers. They all require a windshield header of some sort, and many manufacturers actually use ours. So watch out for cheap "top only" offers.

5. There is a "tarp" style of cover out there that bungees to your roll bar. This does not connect to the windshield, so does not require a channel. But less protection.

One last thing to make sure I have it straight. I know I want one of the Bestop bikinis, so I would like to get the strapless bikini with the drill-in header since its cheaper. Is it only less convenient because it needs to be screwed it? If so, I can live with that since I will only be taking it on and off once a year. Or would the header-style bikini with the bolt on windshield channel be better since I will be taking it on and off? Thanks for your help and patience Geoff!

I think asylum works...

Anyway, I have a question.
Do I have to remove a drill in header to put up my soft top?
I think the answer is yes but I haven't seen it for sure... Geoff?

I am sending this to my wife. She usually uses a totally different acronym.

The drill-in header works great. It's basically what us CJ owners have used as our only option for dozens of years. Some hard core guys prefer it (Jerry Bransford likes to suggest it, and we fight about this sometimes). So yes, the "inconvenience" comes from drilling holes in your Jeep.

Around here we always say YES, you need to remove it. It's possible that others will give a different answer, but I'm not going to recommend it.

Yes, Thank you Geoff! I think I will be going with the strapless/no-drill route cause I'm cheap and I like drilling holes in my Jeep(does that make me crazy?)

You other guys can continue to use this thread for discussion, I might learn something else too.

Hey just a note here learned the hard way:
if you use the drill in header and you have a hard top it wont latch with the header in place finally had to cut he header to get the hard top latched. that was on my son's 98 I have the bolt on header for my 03.
I just got a Spider web shade for Christmas love it I don't have to remove it when I put the hard top on and off

I have the strapless bikini with the no-drill header and I can't really compare it to the drill in header but the no-drill is quite nice...easy on and easy off!

(why are we talking about bikini tops in the middle of January :/ )

I was just driving around with the top down and doors off in Colorado. Snow on the ground but nice, warm weather yesterday.

I love my bikini top. Just took off the hardtop and doors and slapped the bikini on there. I'm really enjoying this 70 degree weather... while it lasts
