Difference In Back Seats ???

Look at these 2 pictures.
One TJ has the back seat arranged where there is still space between the rear seat and back door?

This other TJ has the back seat arranged right up against the back door.

Which TJ models have it one way, and which ones have it the other way?

The black & white TJ has the space behind the seat.
The black & red TJ has the seat right up against the back door.

The TJ bodies look about the same length.

Looks like you would have the same leg room either way.
But having that EXTRA space could sure come in handy.

Maybe Jeep should make a shorter back seat that would fit in between the fender wells (on that first picture). The seat could be placed further back, increasing the storage space. I realize that it would probably only seat ONE person, instead of TWO. But, think of the leg room.

there is a difference in mounting of the back seats. 97-02 mount one way, 03-06 mount a different way. they are not compatible.

there is extra space behind the back seat in the one picture because it's not a TJ. It's an LJ (long wheelbase TJ).

In this picture it looks like the back seat was mounted farther forward so the passengers don't have any room for their legs and feet. It looks pretty wide, almost like it came out of another vehicle.

These pictures came from CG.
The "side views" and the "back seat" pics were posted by whomever was attempting to sell their Jeep. And looking at the pics, they don't look like the one that you posted.

I can't imagine that someone would take pictures of the interior, then take exterior pictures of a different vehicle.

I am sure that you are familiar with the long base TJ, because I see that it's in your signature. I am not disputing you. What you say makes sense. But I am only going by what I see in the pictures.

It never occurred to me that the seat was not the original.
I just figured that he/she had the seat re-upholstered in leather.

Neither one appears to be a LJ

Agreed, in the case of the white one, you can tell by the roll bar. The TJ's rear bars are basically vertical, the LJ's has a bend and angles forward cross bar further forward. Also, my LJ has waaay more room behind the seats

My guess is the way the shots are taken. I'm sure if you took a pic of the white jeep facing the rear with the back gate & glass closed it would the same. Or visa versa

So, basically, both Jeeps are NOT the long wheelbase.
And the white Jeep's backseat is probably not the original seat.

So, do you think both Jeeps are the same size in the back where the seat goes?

Neither jeep is a LJ. Maybe someone put a different rear seat in. Maybe with a slider. Who knows.

BORDER DAVE,

You may be right.

Looking at the backseat in the white Jeep, you can see where the seatbelts come up through the floor. That seat probably is from another vehicle. That seat is wide enough so that it can't fit between the fender wells, where the seatbelts are.

I'm surprised no one has noticed it yet. If you look at the small little "box" where the seat belt comes out of for the back seat, they are in the same place. It's just way the picture was taken that is throwing everyone off. However , it does look like the seat is a different style. You should have the same amount of room in the back though.

what? as i said, there are differences in the mounting of the back seats between years, as stated above. i doubt that's what you're referring to...since the seat position never changed, just how it was mounted.

the body size & seat position didn't change in the TJ. you said you wanted extra space behind the seat, and what i'm getting at is more room behind the seat = LJ.

UNLIMITEDLJ04,

Thanks for the pictures without the tops.
That makes it a lot easier to understand.

Think you will find both Jeeps have the same amount of room behind the back seat.
Look at the pic of the white TJ in relation to the footman loops on the floor pf the tub - there's no mysterious extra room.

And I'll bet the rear seat looks different because it has a seat cover on it (to match the front seat covers).

On the topic of rear seats, is there a way to secure them when you tumble the seat forward? I folded mine and started driving down the road then suddently the seat slammed back down and scared the shit out of me

the Jeep originally came with loop straps that would wrap around the roll bar to one of the latch pins with the seat in the "tumbled" position. any hardware store sells similar straps....
