Differences in model year hard tops?

I found a used hard top listed locally for a 97-01, and mine's an 06.

I'm guessing the only differences in hardtops between the earlier TJs and the later TJs are wiper & defroster options?

that and the older ones had the vents down the backside, they will fit fine and look cooler imo with the vents

Cool. Thanks.

I tried the number, but got no answer. Hope it isn't sold yet.

The wiring harness connection for the hardtop is different in the 97-02 hard tops and 03-06 hard tops. You can just cut the connector off the harness and add the correct one though.

Ohter than that, the only difference in the style of tops is the vents on the sides. The older tops had them, and in 03 Jeep put the vent in the tailgate, and eliminated the rear vents on the hard tops. If you have a newer jeep, all tops will work fine. If you have an older jeep, the newer style hardtop will not work well, as it will have no vents to decompress the cabin when you shut the door.

Stay away from the newer Jeep tops...They got longer the newer they got

Sorry J/K

JC is right it will work but will need to have the harness rigged over to the new top and it will have the vents in the side. Which I think do look better but many have had the same problem as triple88

Thanks for the heads-up. I'll take a good look at those vents before any money changes hands.

Still waiting for the guy to call me back.

Yea, I personally like the newer tops anyway, but they do have problems with the back window poping open (easily fixed per tsb or home depot) and they have a problem with sagging in the front middle. Don't know if the old ones do or not.

Make sure it will fasten the same at the top of the windshield. I bought one thinking the difference in year wouldnt matter, it didnt work, the size was ok but there was only a metal strip at the top, no slots for the clamps. I didnt realize it untill after money changed hands and I had trouble getting my money baack, lost $50.00 on the deal.

Smith you're talking about where the top connects to the front windshield?

Sounds like he's talking about a cj/yj top.

May very well have been.

We did a test fit, it fit perfectly, and I drove home with it tonight. Every Jeep I've owned or driven in the past has had a soft top. All I can say is "wow".

Thanks for the advice everyone.

About a month after I got my Jeep, I drove it up to Talladega for the race. After 4 hours of 70 mph with the soft top, I was already deaf before the race started.

I love the versatility of the soft top when driving around town, but it'll beat you to death after a few hours on the highway.

i always heard the vents were there to keep from blowing out your eardrums in the event of airbag deployment. hmm....i'm sure they'll work fine for both reasons though.

i wish i had a hardtop for the roadtrips too.
