I retired from a large crankshaft MFG 'SCAT Crankshafts" as a senior engine tech. I know that the owner of our company looked constantly for USA forges to do our cranks. There is just not enough production capability to supply a large steel user. All the plants are maxed out. Union labor and EPA regs closed most of the smaller plants and if you are not one of the established already there companies your out of luck. That said our boss had people in place in China at the forging plant. We controlled the mix of recycled scrap to virgin ore. We controlled the mix of additive materials. He is there 4 or 5 times a year. We controlled it all. Brand new state of the art furnaces and presses formed our rough finished parts. They were roughed and then sent to Redondo Beach for finishing. We spent millions here in LA on machines. We had 12 cranks grinders that never got rebuilt. they got replaced with new state of the art units when they fell out of spec. We installed 10 brand new Sunnen digital self stroking rod hones. Anyway our Billet steel came from British steel. We made everything from Formula 1 cranks, Nascar, Super Stock, to aircraft cranks. They just now have a new plant that is in california that made production room for us so we now have some real USA made forgings to go with China ones. Just cause it says China it might not be because it was cheaper but because it was the only way to survive. The EPA is killing the heavy industry in this country.

Scat makes the 4.2 jeep crank now thanks to GOLEN for pushing that thru. They were my customer. Sorry it took so long to get done.

I only got 3.914 out of it. I'm thinking about trying to find another one and shoot for 3.920.

Very true,, I'm not debating the quality, although some stuff coming out of China is horrible, and some is of very high quality, depends on the companies QC. I can also remember when everything that came out of Japan was considered inferior junk. I like to buy American made products whenever possible, keeps my fellow brothers and sisters employed.
