DIY Windshield Repair?

Hey again everyone,

I got hit with a rock this morning in the windshield. I was curious if anyone had any experience with the windshield chip repair kits you can get from the auto parts stores? I dont have any coverage on the jeep that will just fix the chip. The chip isnt in my line of sight so it doesnt have to be perfect, so I thought for 12 bucks, it might be worth fixing myself? Any input on this? The chip is smaller than a dime right now, and I wanna prevent it from getting worse.

I have never had an invisible repair with a do-it yourself kit. It does hide the chip a little bit better but I use it mainly to stop the chip from getting worse. I have done a few on diffrent vehicles over the years and the chip never got worse or turned into a crack, even through harsh cold winters, summer heat and normal daily abuse.

Ya I am just needing it to stop it from getting worse. Its low on my windshield so the "star" wont be bothering me if it doesnt fill perfectly.

I had a dime size chip that the PO had repaired. First time I turned the defrost on last spring windshield cracked about 4" from the chip. Not sure if it was related but I hope he didn't pay too much for the repair.

I didnt have much luck when I tried it once, but a glass company close to me does the chip repairs for 25 bucks guaranteed not to spread and you cant see it at all. Might want to check with some local companies.

So just called the only guy in town that guarantees the star wont crack, and its gonna cost 60 bucks...ouch. Kind of contemplating it though since its guaranteed.

call your favorite service adviser at the local jeep dealership ask to see when their windshield repair guy is coming in. They might be able to cut you a deal.
60 bucks is too much....OUCH

Ya I wasnt a fan of paying 60 bucks (I got it done on my lunch break). My town is small so a lot of things come at a premium (apparently windshield repair being one of them). Also couldnt call a local jeep dealer because we no longer have one. I even talked to a friend, and they said that if I had AAA insurance (which I dont) it would still cost 40 bucks to get it fixed, so 60 isnt completely out of the local price range. However, I would continue going to this guy if I have more window issues. He was a cool guy to talk to, and was the ONLY one in town that guarantees that his repair will not crack, so that is a plus.

Something to keep in mind is that if you have comprehensive on your insurance, your insurance company will replace broken glass for free and it doesn't change your rates.

I do have comprehensive, but its a 250 dollar deductible . A new windshield would have been nice lol.

All insurance companies have different policies regarding windshields. It wouldn't hurt though to call you local agent and ask about it though. As far as TJ windshields they are relatively cheap. I had a new windshield installed for 160$ or so. For many years I had a crack right down the middle. So I wouldn't pay 60$ to have a small chip fixed.

Ya he said replacement was 200 dollars, however my windshield is fine and the repair is barely noticeable. Kind of tight on cash right now, so 60 wasnt horrible in comparison to 200 dollars.

Ya according to my insurance policy each portion of it has a different deductible and the deductible on the comprehensive part was 250. I may still ask my agent about it and see if there is anything they can do since I see this possibly happening again in the near future. All of the main streets in my town and on the base where I work have fresh gravel on them from street repairs

Definately ask your agent. They'd rather foot the bill for a cheap repair job than pay for a windshield replacement.

I have a 500 deductible but they pay for glass repairs for free. Every state is different. In Wi by law they can not replace a windshield for some reason.
