Do I have to remove the whole dash?

I've got an '06 TJ with the windshield-mounted lights. The switch for the lights is in the center of the dash, below the radio and next to the switches for if I ever decide to run a hardtop. The other day I pushed the light switch too hard and shoved it into the dash. Do I have to pull the whole dash out to remount it, or can I pull out that little 6"x8" section? It feels like it should pop out, but I don't want to break any of the latches or anything trying to force it

That little center section comes off after you remove a few screws. Remove the center bezel to get to those screws by pulling it out from the bottom, it is held to the dash by two spring steel clips on either side of the HVAC controls.

Thanks Jerry, but I'm having a little trouble following your directions. There's the rear defroster switch, the rear wiper switch, the hole where my fog-light switch once was, and then an unused switch slot. Beneath that there are the cigarette lighter and the power outlet, and to the right of all of that is a square, unused space. I think part of the problem stems from the fact that, despite looking up the definition, I still don't know what a bezel is. I apologize for my ignorance, but is there any chance you could explain to me as you would a 5-year-old?

(It might be worth mentioning at this point that I bought my Jeep already pretty well built up, so I don't have the experience of doing it myself. I'm trying to learn, but it's turning out to be a slow process for me. Your help and patience is much appreciated!)

The bezel is that big smooth plastic exterior trim piece that surrounds the HVAC controls, radio, foglight/defroster switches, and has the coin tray on its top.

I'm having some difficulty removing the bezel. I tried pulling on it from the bottom like you said, but there doesn't seem to be enough room to put my fingers down there, or anyplace to get a grip. I also tried squeezing it by the HVAC controls where you said the clips were and trying to pull back, but to no avail. Should I be using a flathead to get in there from the bottom?

No, don't squeeze it by the controls... the spring steel clips point straight forward into the area on the sides of the HVAC controls so the bezel needs to be pulled straight out.

You just need to try a little harder, I pull mine off semi-regularly. It fits snugly at the bottom but I eventually get my fingers in there to pull it out. Oh, I forgot... you have to remove the defroster vent panel just under the windshield to get to and remove the two screws that hold the top of the bezel in place. Simply pull straight up on it from one end of the defroster vent, spring steel clips hold it in place. Once the defroster vent is out, remove the two screws on top that hold the top of the bezel in place.

just had mine out over the weekend-I removed the plastic trim piece on top of the dash first -where the defroster is (it just snaps in&out of place)and than you can easily see retaining screws on top. It was also easier for me to "pull back" on the top of the whole shroud to see exactly what was coming off.

Yes, after much ado, I had some success. I went the same route you went though jp2611. After popping off the defroster vent and removing the screws it was very easy to leverage from the top and pull the whole assembly off. While I was messing around with the Jeep I was also able to fix my brake lights, which is nice too! Thanks to both of you for your help. Now I just need some money to replace the stuff I broke on her that can't be fixed
