Do I need to upgrade to an oversize tire carrier?

I recently purchased my 2004 Wrangler Unlimited. When I bought it, it already had a 4" lift and was running 33 x 12.5 x 15 tires. Unfortunately, the previous owner never upgraded the spare tire. Is the stock tire carrier strong enough to mount the 33" spare? Do I need to upgrade to a over-size carrier for additional strength?

You need to for fitment. My 33" spare doesn't fit. Some say that theirs does. But in my opinion it's a good investment.

You should upgrade if you can afford it. Good investment as stated above. That fifth matching tire mounted on the back is like "a cherry on top" Looks soooo nice!

Lost of us have 33's on the stock carrier. I've had my 33x12.5 for 5+ years. The most important part is that the rubber snubbers on the back are tight on the tire. Depending on the wheel back spacing, you likely will have to extend them out by putting something behind the snubbers. A variety of items have been used. Hockey pucks worked perfect for me.

I've had 33s on stock carrier forever,, x2^,, but I also has to space out the bottom of the carrier about 3/4" in order for the tire to clear the stock rear bumper.. It actually looks pretty cool with the spare angled slightly forward ..
