does it really take this long to regear??

got a quote back from a shop near me to regear. 1700 parts and labor for just regear. "5 hours labor to setup a rear axle and 6 hours to do a front axle. $75 an hour is the labor rate. 2 sets of gears, 2 master install kits and 2 carriers are around $750. Add in the gear oil and tax and it puts it between $1600-$1700"

i thought 1000 was the ballpark...

I would do some more shopping around...thats way too steep. I am not sure how long it takes to actually change gears...but that seems pretty expensive from what I hear. I got mine done for around 900.

yeah exactly what i was thinking. i swear i read on here that someone had dropped their jeep off at 8 and got it around noon that same day. 11 hours...they must suck at regearing. its a 4x4 shop too (Appalachian Offroad)

3-3.5 hours max for the front axle, 2.5-3 hours max for the rear axle. If they're just quoting what the factory manual says, find a different shop to install the gears. $500 or so maximum total labor cost to regear both axles is about right.

when i do get this done, what would make sense to do while the diff is apart, aside from lockers (which i am considering). 30 spline?

What rear axle do you have? And is your Jeep a daily driver during winter when you have lots of snow/ice on the road?

And $1000-1200 max is realistic to regear both axles. They're undoubtedly hoping you'll just bite at the $1700 without knowing any better. Tell them that price is way too high and that you'll pay no more than $1100. Negotiate man!

Try to find a shop with a flat rate. My local shop charges $250/axle. My regear was $1200 out the door.

35" tires are too big for a stock rear Dana 35, it won't hold up in stock form. If you decide to install a locker, put it up front only where an Aussie, Lockrite, or No-Slip (silent, no clicking like the others). Your rear Dana 35c's stock axle shafts are not strong enough to hold up to a locker and 33" tires, not even close. The Dana 35c can, however, be made strong enough for both 35" tires and a locker by installing a Super 35 kit from Superior Axle.
