I'm looking for a jeep as a second vehicle to drive around town and drive on the weekends. I'm not looking to spend too much since it is a second vehicle. The mileage is kind of high but it seems that these jeeps are pretty reliable. What other concerns should I have?
Actually driving it will tell you a lot more about it as well, everything the guy before me said aswell, just look it over real well but the price is pretty good around where I am you can't find one like that for less than 7 it seems
If the frame is good, that price is great for an 4.0L. I paid 6k for my 2.5L with a mediocre frame but it also had 60k miles less than that Jeep and it is a manual.
Wait until you find the Jeep that you really want. If you want to mod your jeep it will be a part of your personality. If you're having doubts don't get that Jeep. People on this forum searched months before finding the one for them.
if this one is not too rusty, drives straight and smooth at highway speeds, doesn't leak or blow smoke, and 4HI and 4LO work properly, and you could get it for under $5500, I think you would have a decent deal.
I'm going to try to look at this one this weekend. I'm not super excited about the 4 cylinder engine but I guess the purpose of a Jeep isn't to go fast. I think it's a very good deal. Am I correct?

I'd offer $3500, he had body work done because of rust through, check the frame VERY carefully, bring a screwdriver to poke the frame and a magnet to see just how much body work was done.
I'd look for a Sahara, it'll come with the stronger Dana 44 rear axle and 3.73s. A 4-cyl will have 4.11s but will use the weaker Dana 35 rear. It'll handle medium off-roading with tires up to around 31", though. 30x9.50s look pretty good on a stock Jeep, here's my old 2000 Sahara.
Thanks for the correction, I knew it was an option on YJs but thought it'd become standard on Saharas when the TJ came along. Even our company owner's '99 Sport has a Dana 44 (and AC, which my '00 Sahara didn't.)
Thanks for all your advice, guys. I'm hoping to pull the trigger on a Wrangler soon.
What do you think would be a fair price for this? The seller said there is just some surface rust and it doesn't have A/C. I think I'd want the 4.0 but I probably will just drive this around town and maybe take it on 55 mph roads so I probably won't do too much highway driving.
Looks to be in good shape, like every jeep crawl under it and check the frame. Make sure everything works shifts smooth. IMO I would hold out for a 4.0 the motors seem to last twice as long as the 4cyl from what I've read. Don't know where you are at but where I live that would be a good price, prices seem to vary some depending where you live. Cash talks though I'd offer 3900 and go from there
At that price I'd go for it, there isn't a whole lot to the 4wd system and the 231j is easy to work on and rebuild. The gauges would probably be more of a challenge than the transfercase. I'd go for it personally that price is good. High mileage is worrisome though
Crawl under it really good and listen for any out of places noises, check the transfer case linkage to eliminate that as a problem. Drive it from slow speeds to high speeds, put it through its paces. If there's more wrong than what he's sayin you'll find out by driving and feeling it
