Doing LED dash mod? Please read!!!

After reading about the mod on here I decided to it to my 98 TJ. I ordered 7 of their brightest blue bulbs with 3 leds(#74's), 5 for the dash and 2 for the heater/AC panel. As soon as they arrived I threw them into the dash and panel and as soon as I turned on the lights to check them out there was a funny smell and smoke coming out of the control panel.....FUDGE!!!!!

So I calll them up to complain, the guy was super nice and talked to me for 45 minutes to try and figure out what may have went wrong. He promptly sent me free replacements as well as new twist lock connectors and 1 LED bulbs.

His thought the whole time was that the 3 LED bulb has a small circuit board that may have been touching the metal inside the twist lock and frying the bulb. Guess what he was dead on right!!!!

After I got the new bulbs as well as twist locks I tried every combo there was including the factory glass bulbs. As soon as I tried the 3 LED bulbs POOF again! The new twist locks wouldnt work at all with any of the bulbs. The single LED bulbs worked like a charm and is still going strong.

So I ended up with the 3 LED bulbs in the dash and the single LED bulbs in the heater panel control. There is a slight difference in the brightness level but Im good with it. So if you are planning to do this mod and your TJ has the slider style ONLY heater/AC panel dont buy the 3 LED bulbs for the panel.

The Pictures show the little circuits that touch the metal in the twist lock connector as well as the metal that shorts them out. Hope this helps and Happy Jeepin!

This might be a stupid question, but couldn't you just not push them in all the way?

The bulbs have to be pushed in all the way to work correctly(at least I think), this is what causes them to short out from touching the metal inside the connector if that makes sense. This is only an issue with the 3 LED bulbs.

Thanks X 2.
I've been having some issues with the LEDs I put in the HVAC on my '97.

Haven't pulled it out to see what's going on but that looks like a good place to start.

I don't know either. The contacts are the verticle strips of metal at the bottom of the bulb as shown in your pic. It seems like they would make contact without pushing the bulb all the way into the socket. Again, I don't know, but for people that haven't done theirs yet, it's something to think about.
