Doors wont come off?

I have a 2002 TJ and i cannot get the doors off to save my life. When i bought it, it was used, and I had thought maybe they installed the security bolts, but they are stock. I have tried wedging a screwdriver in between the hinges and prying it off and tapping it with a mallet. Plenty of WD40 and other lubes, cannot seem to do it. Any suggestions? I am not worried about damaging the paint, i will be repainting the entire jeep shortly so scratches or chips are not an issue. Spring is coming and I cannot go another mud season with doors on.

Use a floor jack with a block of wood to push the door up... Its a common thing to happen if the PO didn't take the doors off much...

Exactly how I got my severely stuck doors off. Don't use a jack. Thats just going to destroy them.

Please dont use a floor jack! I used a block of wood when i took mine off for the first time and ended up bending the door slightly. I ended up using a tork bit and taking the hinges off the body of the jeep and then hammering them off the door. I rather bend a hinge than a door.

Hmm... Well sorry for info that might be bad... I used a jack and a block of wood and it worked flawlessly. I just made sure to go slowly to make sure it didn't start to bend. If it took too much force i was planning on quitting and what was said above about taking the hinges off with the door.

Using a floor jack is perfectly fine. You just have to remember your not jacking up the jeep to change a tire. A small amount of pressure from the jack..which is a lot more then your arms, knees, or back can produce is not going to bend the doors if you use your brain.

I tried EVERYTHING to get mine off. I tried different lubes like wd40 and PB blaster..i tried pulling, pushing, swinging, prying, twisting, different angles, standing on the inside of the door, on the outside of the door...Nothing worked for a few days.
Finally i got the floor jack out with a block of wood for extra height, and a rolled up beach towel between the door and the wood. Gave the jack a few SMALL pumps and the door literally popped of the hinges. It would be best to have a friend hold the door while you apply SMALL amount of pressure.

Keep a light coat of grease on the pins once you get them off and they will never be stuck again.

I put a rag over the hinges (pretty thick) and hit it with a hammer so it knocked the rust loose or whatever was holding it in there worked flawlessly.

Once upon time... I was pulling up with all my might on my pristine condition YJ's half door when all of a sudden... It came out of the hinge and...out of my hands landing on the cowl putting a huge dent and scratch in it. It made me sick ! Becareful when lifting up on heavier full doors and I hope you enjoyed the bedtime story .

Here's what I did..got the break free and sprayed each hinge post. Let it set 15 minutes and then as I swing the door open and closed I lift on it..it took some grunting but they came out. Then I cleaned each hing and post and put some quality grease on them..now they come out and go back in nice and easy.

Just be careful and use constant up lift while opening and closing them.

Good Luck

Yup...exactly this. Mine were NOT coming off without the jack. I even pulled over to a curb that was tall enough for me to have good leverage on the thing - it wasn't budging. Even with the jack, I was swinging it back and forth to get it out...it was a VERY slow process.

MY 03 was the same way when I got it. After a lot of swinging and tugging, they finally popped loose. I still have to do it sometimes to get them off. Practice makes perfect.

I cut a 2x2 block of wood 1 1/2 inch longer then from the door to the floor . Then after three days of lubing the hinges I used the block of wood and moved the door back and forth .

On my jeep, the part of the bolt above the threads and below the hinge had a "ridge" of paint and rust that was holding the doors on. I took a small file and cleaned it up as best I could, and the doors came off fairly easy. It's not rust inside the hinge or else the door wouldn't be able to swing open!

Dumb question. Did you remove the nuts? Don't laugh, it's happened.

Patience and WD40 usually work. First time I took mine off I had to let the WD40 soak in for a bit. You have to use even pressure when pulling up and sometimes wiggle it a bit.
