E3 spark plugs

These are on sale at my local autozine and my jeep is due for plugs anyone have any experience with these or should I stay clear of these and stick with champion plugs or something?

I have hade them in my rig for 3 years. My mileage slightly improved. No issues yet.

I was debating whether to get them as well since my jeep needs new plugs. I talked to one of the techs at my local o'reilly's auto parts and he explained that since they have a different design then the factory plugs that they would put out a different resistance and could cause wiring problems. He recommended replacing with standard copper. They are cheaper too. Just one opinion though.

I personally wouldn't install them if they were free. I wouldn't even allow someone else to install them to save me the effort.

just go standard plugs, I run autolite coppers in mine, change um once a year weather they need them or not, runs great on those, they're only like $1.50 a plug I think. my friend runs ngk iridiums, and hasn't needed to change in 4 years now no problems.

At the customers request I have installed them in four different vehicles ( 2 Corvettes a Jeep and a Chevy truck, Yes I specialize in Corvettes and Jeeps...weird huh? ) All four vehicles have returned within a matter of weeks asking to have the factory recomended sparkplugs installed. Missfires, hardstarting, loose of fuel mileage, rough running seems to be what can be expected.

I'll give you a few good spark plug recommendations TJ Skip, what engine & year TJ are you running?

Oh, I don't like E3 spark plugs due to a lot of things... I personally don't believe their quality is up to snuff, their claims are patently ridiculous, misleading, and nothing but hype in my personal opinion. If a manufacturer makes claims that sound too good to be true, they very likely are.

Have them in my 2004 TJ. No opinion one way or the other. Can't say I have improved MPG. Haven't had any problems either. Probably not worth the extra cost.

Three great plugs for your 2004 distributorless ignition system (DIS) 4.0L engine... the first two will perform well for 100k miles: Autolite APP-985 or the Champion 7034, both of which are platinum tipped plugs. Those are double-tipped platinum plugs.

The Autolite XP-985 is iridium tipped and it should perform well for 200k miles.

Be wary, 2000 and newer DIS 4.0L engines are very fussy about what type of spark plugs they run well on. So the above recommendations are known to perform very well, just avoid any single-tipped platinum plugs like the Autolite AP-985 or Champion 3034.

Single-tipped platinum means the platinum coating is on just the center electrode. Double-tipped platinum means the platinum coating is on both sides of the gap.

So if the 2000 and newer are picky about plugs, are the 97-99 more leniant? Ive got 98 4.0l and plugs are probably due a change..

Yes. In short, The DIS actually fires the plug on each cylinder twice during the 4 cycles (one revolution) of engine operation, making the DIS system harder on spark plugs.

Ok cool thanks! So im assuming the ones Jerry listed above for the 2000+ tjs are an excellent choice for 97-99?

I received a set of E3's from my Dad for Christmas to install in my 97 TJ 4.0 but after asking about them here I returned them for Autolites and a little money back. Before returning I took a look at them and two out of the box had galled up threads...cheap Chinese made crap! Avoid E3's! Period! If they were that good automakers would install them to help get there MPG ratings down....they don't, so like Jerry said, If it sounds too good to be true...it is.

The same plugs are applicable for many engings. The gap out of the box for any plug may or may not be correct for all applications. You should always be prepared to measure and adjust.

1999 and older 4.0L engines with a distributor & all 2.5L engines are not as fussy about their spark plugs as the 2000 and newer DIS 4.0L engines are. They can use any of the plugs I recommended aboe with good results.

Two less expensive plugs the 2.5L and older 4.0L can also use include the platinum Autolite AP-985 or platinum Champion 3034. They will get the same 100k mile life the more expensive plugs recommended above will. The XP-985 from Autolite can also be used which should get pretty close to 200k miles.

I heard of issues from the E3s

Just get the recommended plugs for the engine so they can do what they are meant to do and the coating will determine how long they will last
