Electrical problem

Hi there,
I've looked through many a post regarding electrical problems, and found symptoms of what I'm seeing in different posts but not together or missing symptoms of others so i thought i'd ask in a new thread.

Two days ago, went outside and jeep wouldn't start, heard the rapid clicks, but no go. neighbor heard, offered a jump and that made the jeep start up with no problems.
A few min later I got a "check gauges" light. All gauges read normal.
Went home, checked batt terminals and wires with no obvious problems.
Next morning, wouldn't start without a jump, started driving and the "check gauges" light turned on after a few min. however, this time the light went out on it's own about 10 min later while driving on the freeway. Stopped for about an hour and again, jeep wouldn't start without a jump. Same thing every time I go to start it regardless of distance driven or how recently i get a jumpstart

Can't tell if it's the battery or the alternator or something else? ideas?

I would bet battery is toast...it happens. If you can jump it and drive it with out problems the alt is working, the battery just cant get re-charged. Once a battery had been drained a few times the innards just cant take it. Not sure whats wrong with the battery, but I'd say it is done.

as for the Check guages...i am grasping because I have never looked in the differences of check gauges and check engine, but if there was a fault on the charging system then i'd bet on a check engine, a bad battery would probably kick the volt gauge into an error.

Any time I have had a hard starting, but fine after a jump, its been the battery.

If you have a meter you can check it....while not running if the battery isnt over 11.5+ volts then its not holding a charge

Just happened to me this morning. I just cleaned off the corrosion on the battery posts and cleaned off the connectors with a battery brush and was able to start it up. My battery was manufactured in 2006, so it's probably due to be replaced.

I just had to mess around with the terminal connectors again at lunch time and it took me about 10 minutes again. Obviously, it wasn't due to corrosion this time, so I had to finagle the connectors and made sure I had good contact with the battery posts. After letting it idle, it would drop down to something like 150rpm. It felt like the engine was dead, but I would just give it a little bit of gas and it would jump up to 1000, but then act like it was going to stall going back down to 150rpm, but wouldn't die.

I just fixed the problem. Got a Duralast Gold (34-DLG) from AutoZone. They come with an 8 year pro rated warranty. If the battery fails in the first 3 years, you get a free one. ~$105.
