engine compartment washing?

I was wondering how do you wash the engine compartment?

Is it ok to open the hood and wash it with a hose?

Thanks

I did mine the other day after flushing my heater core and making a bit of a mess. I just made sure to leave the engine running and drive it a bit after so everything dried with the heat.

I spray around the engine with Simple Green and than just rinse it off with a nozzle on a "shower" setting, no high pressure. I leave the hood open under direct sunlight to dry.
