i own an OBDii code reader
but the local car parts shop will often read the code for free...if the Jeep is drivable...

I have heard that there is an ignition switch on/off sequence that will flash the code

found it...
To get a code, turn the ignition on/off/on/off/on (within 5 seconds), and the odometer will display the codes in sequence

I have four vehicles in the house I have to maintain so I purchased a code reader. They are not very expensive. I just cut back on beer for a few days.

The early jeeps 97-00 have the feature built in. Makes it really nice. I think when the 55 flashes 3 times the codes are done.

Disconnect the battery. I normally ground out the positive side after I have disconnected. Gives it a full drain then reattach.

Did you at least read the code as opposed to just clearing it? You should find out what is wrong.

Jeep has that ability in most model years though they skipped it in '98-99 and possibly in some of the early 2000 models too. It works in '97 and then 2000 and newer model TJs. Yep when you see the '55' code, that means it's done and no more codes follow.

i had the engine light on last week, showed the iddle controler or something like this. my mecanic (wich i trust) checked my battery and found a bad cell. he told me that in most Chrysler, a bad cell would trow a code. so before getting anything done, get your battery tested to see

I've got the error codes for TJ's 98-06.When I address one, after I've fixed the error,I'll disconnect pos, ground it,drink a beer, then hook her back up and code is cleared.I'll run thru code seq. again and it will read DONE on odometer. Most common check engine is evap leak major or minor, which is usually a bad seal on fuel cap,or pinched -rotten evap lines.

It will go off if the condition has cleared. There is no way to make any guesses. You would have to get the codes to make any diagnosis. There are a ton of codes for many, many reasons. It may or may not affect operation.
