The 3K mile oil change interval is nothing more than something pushed by the quick change oil outfits like Jiffylube. Unless you are in constantly harsh dusty conditions, I'd use 5K to even 7.5K change intervals. Personally, I change my engine oil every 5K miles unless I was wheeling in extra-dusty conditions.

Just saw an article on the news the other nite on this exact topic. Back 20-30 years ago regular oils were a lot different (poorer) than they are today. Therefore oil change intervals can be extended especially with synthetics.

Valvoline Synthetic motor oil???

Just curious if anyone is using this motor oil. Just went to the parts store and it was on sale for $2.99 a quart.

Valvoline is a top-notich brand, that's what I use. I just won't pay extra for their synthetic version. Synthetic might be a good idea for you however during the winter if it gets super-cold in your part of Idaho but I wouldn't pay more for synthetic during the warmer times of the year.

It was in 6 pack boxes. I brought 20 boxes home with me. For $2.99 a quart. It is $7.97 over at Wally World. Wife will probably go ballistic but she will get over it.

That's a smoking deal, nice find! For $2.99 I would run synthetic too.

I've always used Mobil 1 and was thinking about switching to Royal Purple. I had one free oil change on my jeep, and will be going forward from here with synthetic. I always went with synthetic to pull those extra miles, but it's good to see that people are pulling 2000+ with conventional.

We use 3K intervals for our ambulances at the county. They see that milage in about 3-4 weeks. I was looking at my owners manual and it says to use 7500 mile intervals for oil changes under normal operating conditions. It says to use 3K intervals if any of the following apply to you regularly:

day or night temps below freezing
Stop and go driving
Extensive engine idling conditions
Driving in dusty conditions
Short trips of less than 10 miles
More than 50% of your driving is at sustained high speeds during hot weather above 90 degress F
Trailer towing
Taxi, Police, or delivery service
Off-road or desert driving
If equipped for and operating with E-85 fuel

I use a compromise and I go with 5K intervals all the time. That's just me. Hope this helps.
