Engine time

Looks like my engine just went (4.0 5 speed Sport). It's a 2002 with only 148k. Came home from work last night and it was slapping pretty bad on the low end. Just had a mechanic look at it and he said it was shot. Couldn't give me a price until suppliers open on monday. I'm going to take it for another opinion as well.
Any ideas how much I'm going to be in for it with this one? Is it better just to have a re-manufactured engine dropped in or to have a shop rebuild it? Any re-manufactured engine brands to stay away from? If I do this, anything else I should have done while it's out?

Or do I drop a stroker in there? Does anything else need to be upgraded with the Golen?

Stroker all day... For their relatively cheap cost and huge performance boost, just do it.

One thing to think about with the stroker is you'll have to use Premium fuel. I think it would be worth it though.

The 4.6 Golen specs give out 270 HP and 320 ft-lbs of torque (versus stock 181 hp and 282 ft-lbs) for about $4000. I found Titan engines that does jeep strokers. Their 4.6 specs show 265 HP and 295 ft-lbs for $2895.
Too much torque for stock axles (30 & 44) and running 35 inch tires?

I have heard some threads on titan where guys were pretty unhappy. Golen none that I can remember. If you can afford it the stroker will put a big smile on your face.

A stroker would be awesome. How do you change all of your parameters after doing a stroker?

Pull the valve cover and see if you notice anything...broken spring, loose rocker? It couldn't hurt since you have to wait until monday anyway.

Good Idea, all that was wrong with mine was some flat cam lobes. If your on a budget
and still have compression. It couldn't hurt. Mine backfired and bent some push rods.

Is $4000 for a remanufactured jasper (4.0) installed about right?
