Unhappy erratic

i recently purchased a 98 wrangler sport 4.0 l in CA and drove it back to las vegas. it made the trip fine, but just today the idle was erratic and above 1200 rpm at a stop and then would drop. also while driving the were hesitation and bucking through every gear. wasn't sure i was going to make home. any ideas on ware to start would be appreciated. i am new to the jeep world and was having a blast until this happened.

Lots of things can cause that...

first, give us all the specs of the rig, ie what trans, any mods and the like.

Second, it sounds like it could be a vacuum issue or it could be a sensor like the MAF(assuming it has one). Check for cracks in any and all air plenums, and all the vacuum lines, it will be the easiest fix if it ends up being something like that.

I replaced the plugs with Champions(same as what was in it), #6 looked the worst with some carbon build up. All of the electrodes were worn(rounded off).

Still had had high idle and "stuttering" when lightly touching the gas pedal. I cleaned the IAC and throttle body, and checked the map sensor elbow.

Did alot of reading and eventually tested the TPS and the numbers were way off from this post:

Testing TPS Sensors - Quadratec Jeep Forum

I went and bought an AZ TPS, K&N drop in, and oil and filter to do a oil change because it needed it.

TPS was the fix, idle came down and no more stuttering/bucking, noticeable power gain too.

Thanks for the help!
