Ever Broken A Front Driveline In Half?

I was out wheeling today, I got into a gnarly hole. Then "TING" I figured it was a u joint. Aftern 15 min of getting winched out. I looked to see what happened and my front driveline was broken in half. Is this normal? I have heard of u joint breaking but snapping it in half???????

Lol... Just in a days fun right? lol Guess it needed to be upgraded anyways. I would have thought my front axle would have broken before that.

Clean the mess off and I suspect you will find a wear ring all the way around where the tube was rubbing against a rock or similar. I've seen many driveshafts essentially cut in half by doing that. The tube is thin and any rubbing of it against anything while it is spinning will cause it to fail just like that.

That makes perfect sense. I havent cleaned it up yet, but did notice there was a dent in it. Maybe that weakened it and like you said the friction just sawed it in half. I could have only been on the throttle for 30 sec max and not even full just gassing it to see if it would budge forward or backward.

At idle in first gear you are roughly 4 to 1 or 4 turns of the engine to 1 turn of the driveshaft. 30 seconds at 700 RPM means you only spun the driveshaft about 32 times once you factor in the t-case gearing in 4 low.

It doesn't take long to cut completely through a thin piece of tube against a rock and that is at idle.
