Exhaust smell on decel

1998 TJ, 4.0, 5sp.

The exhaust usually smells fine, like any other car with the catalytic converter working. However, when I take my foot off the gas in 5th and start coasting, I get a bit of exhaust smell as if the cat is not working - smells like motorcycle exhaust.

Think it's just running rich on decel? Or the cat cools down and stops working?

If it is the cat, are they fairly DIY replaceable? Do I need to mig weld it in there? Are the clamp-on ones any good (ie, do the clamps seal the exhaust in?)

I think my cat is bad as well. It rattles like crazy so I'm curious as to what you find out...

Some of us are way past sea foam. If the converter is rattling then its coming apart and the only thing that will stop that from happening is a clogged muffler
