Question Extended Life Motor Oil?

Hey guys-

I saw at the auto parts store that Mobil has out an extended-life motor oil that can be changed at 15,000 miles or at one year. What is your opinion on using this in a Wrangler?

If I used it, I wouldn't wait that long to change my oil. Any motor oil at the proper weight will do you just right, as long as you change it regularly.

I'd say that if it's good enough you could probably go maybe 7k or so before a change, but I don't think I'd every go 15k. Just seems like nothing could stand up the AZ heat that long.

Oil collects contaminants at the same rate, no matter if it is synthetic, mineral, extended-change, or whatever. Change your oil at every 3-5K miles and your engine will last longer than it would if you waited to change the oil. And factory style oil filters cannot filter out those contaminants which include acids and combustion byproducts.

Good call. I agree with that 100%.

I do not think there is a better oil than Gastrol 10W-30. The only thing better is synthetic......IMHO

I use 10w30 myself, As far as brand goes, it's not that important as long as you keep it changed.

Do you change the oil yourself? I took mine to a Midas a couple of months ago and they didn't change the oil or the filter and I took it back and demanded my money back. I guess they don't think we are going to check our filters to see if they are new or check the quality of the oil. Ha!

Question

Is there an advantage to synthetic for Jeeps? or just stick with conventional?

Sometimes I change it myself, sometimes I'll take it and get it done. I ALWAYS watch them change it when I take it to get it done.

I don't know if there is an advantage to synthetic or not. I read in Consumer Reports that there is no advamtage as long as you change your oil regularly.

I don't think syntheits was designed to be better than conventional oil. It was designed to be a suitable replacement for regular oil.

IMHO, synthetics will not break down as quickly and lose their lubricating properties as soon as regular oil. They do however become dirty just as fast. So, in conditions with a lot of dirt, water, dust or HD use one needs to keep it changed regularly. The cleaner you keep your oil and air in your engine the longer it will last. I run a name brand synthetic 10w30 but still change it every 3k miles, 2500 if I did a lot of wheeling.

I got some oil this evening that I am going to try....just some Mobil conventional oil. It's supposed to last 5,000 miles. Tomorrow I am going to change the oil and filter and hopefully get the brake pads switched out on the front.

Nicely said, I agree 100%! Manufacturers of so-called extended-life lubricants fail to mention that they do absorb contaminants at the same rate as conventional oils do, thus they still need to be change frequently.

Hence loosing its selling point, and justification of paying twice the amount for.
