extra starter switch

my 1997 wrangler starts some of the time.i turn the key against the spring and some of the time the starter engages.other times nothing.when it doesnt start i noticed the headlights do not dim, meaning the starter motor isnt drawing power.can i hook up a switch on the dash that will run current to the solenoid without damaging the computer?basically wiring a remote starter switch like mechanics use.

Why not just replace the ignition switch? The tumbler mechanism comes out of the igntion switch assembly separately so you wouldn't even need to rekey for it.

well because i dont know that the column switch is bad, it may be the solenoid for example and an extra starter switch would help me determine what is bad.what is involved changing a column starter switch?

new discovery! the key stops at the first ink line mark in the picture some of the time and does not start ..some of the time the key stops at the second ink line mark and does start.simply put sometimes the keys turns further and thats when it starts.but why does the key turn further some of the time?

Looks like you found the problem, and it seems to confirm the earlier suggestion to replace the ignition switch. That the key doesn't turn all the way to the Start position at times simply means the igntion switch module has a mechanical problem.

it gets better..when the key does not turn all the way i simply push it in towards the steering column and then it does turn all the way..i can pull the key out when it is on ,sloppy lock,,,so do i need just a tumbler exchange or a whole new ignition switch?
