Fabricating a Roof Rack

I need to carry a couple of Kayaks on the Jeep (hard top). I know there are several different companies that provide roof racks for this, but I can't see spending $500-$600 for a 1 inch tube rack. Here is what I'm thinking...I have a class 3 hitch. Fabricate a rear rack that slides into the hitch and goes up to a "T". Either on the location on the side of the windshield or on the front bumper, Fabricate an upside down "U" shaped bracket and tie that into the "T" on the rear.

Anyone done something like this themselves? Pics? I have a couple of contacts that can do this for free, MAYBE i'll have to buy some bar-stock or tubing.

Your idea sounds like it should work. You wont be able to open the rear window or tailgate. If you look at my photo the rear rack extends out from the sides. The front looks simular to a light bar, coming up from the windshield hinges.

I'm looking at building a mock up of something like this out of pvc for my jeep to test some of the designs before actually making something.

I'l post some of what I do.

I paddle too and I bought this...

It was only $279 and should function great for holding a couple of kayaks etc. The crossbars are easily removeable for going topless and the bars are compatible with Thule and Yakima accessories. Might be an option...

The basket is extra. I didn't need it so I didn't order one...

Kargo Master, was less than 300 great for my sea kayak and anything else you can put up there. But if you are handy and can do one cheaper, go for it.

Same as above..$22 at the pick-n-pull from a Ford Explorer and it works great. I'm sure you could fab up some type of cradle for your kayaks on there without too much trouble.
