Factory D44 in a TJ?

Here's the deal: I'm looking for a TJ Sport (probably) with a Dana 44, however, I've come across several people that claim to be "Jeep experts" that have told me there never was a Dana 44 rear option on TJ's other than the Rubi. I'm sure that I've read on here and other places that that just isn't the case. In fact, I've gone to Jeep's website and have looked up the build sheets for a few different TJ's and have seen with my own eyes that the 44 was factory installed on them. Also, there's an obvious visual difference between the 35C and the "nonexistent" heavy-duty 44 when you simply pop your head under the back and take a peek. One self-proclaimed Wrangler aficionado called that a "Dana 40" and even rattled off some specs on it, which I find interesting as I'm fairly certain the "40" doesn't even exist.

Am I missing something or are these other guys just less educated than they think they are?

Thanks, gentlemen!

Sounds like idiot car salesmen trying to sell you something you don't want. The D44 was a factory option in sports and the D40 isn't a thing.

All LJs came factory with a rear D44. Sports and Saharas had D44 option and I think the X's didn't come with a D44 option as the X is the most basic trim.

2003 Sport with 30" Wheel Package, so it came with a Dana 44 rear/Dana 30 front with 3.73 in the pumpkins when new.

Dana 40? BAHAHAHA!!! These guys are self-important asshats. Don't bother "correcting" them, either. Just stop chatting with them. God only knows what other foolishness they will tempt you with, man!

Dana 44 rear axles in TJ's:

1997: not available

1998-2002: Optional on Sport and Sahara, not available on SE or X models (X came out 2002)

2003-2006: Standard on Sahara and Rubicon (Sahara ended in 2004), not available on X.

All long wheelbase TJ's (the LJ) has D44 rear axle.

To the O.P.: maybe your friends were thinking about the FRONT axle. Only the Rubicon got the D44 front axle.

^excellent! do you have your Build Sheet? If not you can get one so easily. I am always anxious to prove the Jeep literature wrong.
