Factory installed tow package.

My 06 X tj has what I believe to be the factory tow package. It is also factory wired for a 7 prong round trailer connection. What upgrades were made to Jeeps with the towing package. Does the factory wiring do anything special other than just the lights. Thanks for the help guys.

C'mon guys surely someone has a TJ with the factory tow package installed. My main question is on the wiring. Is the factory wired plug have any provision for trailer brakes or just lights?

all the data I have shows there never was a factory option for Tow Group on a TJ.

Plenty of aftermarket tow packages were installed on TJ's though.

Check this link out. If it is a 7 pin harness it is most likely wired for brakes. I have never seen a jeep with a 7-pin though. My thought on that is that TJ's weren't designed to tow enough weight to where you would need the extra brakes on the trailer.

Thanks guys. I have a chance to buy a older 3/4 Ford Pick up bed that has been converted into a trailer. It also has an aluminum camper shell on it. I can buy it tomorrow for $200 bucks. I am thinking of making a river rat camper that has ground clearance to go anywhere. 12' aluminum boat on top I think a rig like this should still be light enough for the Jeep to handle at least for short to intermediate camping runs for me and the wife.

2000lbs is the max I would with any tow/hitch setup and even then I'd be wary. I plan on installing hitch hopefully next year and invest small local utility trailer for draggin around a snowblower. Make abit of income when no one else can get out of there yards Gotta love your jeep!

Can a TJ safely tow a camper like the one I described above? This thing should weigh considerably less than 2,000 lbs. It would be used mainly for short trips camping at the river or lake with possibly some longer trips sight seeing and camping for the wife and I.
This depends on the answers I get today.

Under 2000lbs, yes. Above that, your chances of an accident are increased. I believe its also written in the owners manual which I have as well. My suggestion would be to find a weight station and check if your not sure on the exact weight your hauling. You'd be surprised what weights what...

Well went and did it. I purchased the aforementioned pickup bed trailer/camper shell. My goal is to build the ultimate light weight camping/hunting/fishing wagon. I can start another thread on the build if anyone interested in a similar project. First off I wanted the ground clearance off road capable rig. My main goal is to keep it as light as possible while still having what is needed for a camping extended stay hunting blind. I started with this.
Added a little mandatory Camo.

Cleaned up the inside.

And Voila a nice foundation for the project
