Well my plan was to use the factory steps for now for a little extra protection being winter and all plus this would let me do some other mods first, got a pretty long list, thanks for the responses,I'll check tomorrow and see if I can figure out what the bolt size is.

If your jeep didn't come with the steps the holes are probably blank. "not threaded".

They use nutserts to bolt to the frame. You can pick up the nutserts and the nutsert tool at the dealership.

First thing, check your mounting bolt pattern on the steps as the 97-2000 has like 7 mounting holes and I think the 2001-2006 has 4 mounting holes IIRC.

I think there is 3 on one end and 4 on the other end on the 97 thru 00 and only 2 on each end on the 01 thru 06.

My steps are like that (3 toward rear and 4 toward front). They came off a 97 and I had to get nutserts for my 98. I got them from JEEPSAREUS.COM which stocks mopar parts. I would not get the bolts as they are torx. The nutserts were $2.25 each and you can buy 12mm hexhead bolts at a hardware store for about $0.15 each. There is a writeup on the internet that you can google that tells you how to use a 18 inch bar in place of the nutsert tool in case you can't find one. I also put a little red loctite on the nutsert just for good measure

I dont know at exactly what year but they changed the style. The older style have 7 bolts. 4 in the front and 3 in the rear. The newer style seem to have some kind of notches on top and screws on the bottom.

I used a 18"x1"x1/8" piece of metal I had laying around the garage. Drilled a hole about an inch from the bottom big enough for the bolt to go through freely.

The write up I found for this is Nutserts and if folowed properly works well. This is an easy project if done right. Don't seat a nutsert completely and they become a booger to remove. I had to punch one into the frame hole after cutting the bolt. Sucker started to spin and would not go in or out. Other than that it was a piece of cake.
