Factory Subwoofer Rubicon TJ

After 9 years, I finally blew the factory subwoofer on my '03 Rubicon. It's toast. Too much Michael Jackson. NOT!! I want to replace it. Is the speaker an 8" sub? I was going to upgrade with a name brand woofer. Do I need an adapter kit? I've heard the factory wiring is designed for the factory speakers. Any help is appreciated. I haven't opened the console up yet. It happened about 15 minutes ago. Also, I'm guessing I access the speaker through the top storage area.

it's 6" speaker there and acces from the bottom storage area, cup holers have bolts(10mm socket) one bolt front and 2 rear

even if you buy brand name audio with 6" bass it will sound almost the same, i believe

installing bigger speaker might be difficult...

Quadratec sells a good replacement that fits without any modifications

Careful - it's 6.5". I started a similar thread in the TJ tech forum a couple months ago and it's still going! Got lots of good (and some questionable) advice. Learned in the process.

Yes, the factory wiring is weird. The speaker is a 1-ohm, dual voice coil. Nobody makes that, and Dodge won't sell you just the speaker. They'll sell you the "kit" for $800 (not joking) that's speaker, enclosure, and amplifier.

I went with the previously mentioned Quadratec speaker. Very easy to install, prefect fit (though noticeably beefier than the stock unit) and sounds at least as good as stock. But then again, I wasn't paying (dealer paid since stock speaker was dead when I bought the Jeep).

You'll have to take the center console out (easy - 4 bolts). Hardest part was getting the wiring harness disconnected. After 7 years of being together, the M and F sides wanted to stay that way.

Hopefully this will help you if you want to stay stock(ish). If you're interested in other options, seek out that other thread and see what others have done. I need room for a dog in the back, so my options are limited.

I would save the money and get the kicker 6.5" for ~$50. You will need to snap or cut off some little tabs inside the sub enclosure but I did that just with some pliers. It will be louder and cheaper than the quadratec one, but you do have to do some more work. And yes, it's a 6.5" speaker.

I have the kicker 6.5 in mine running an after market amp to it. I'm completely happy with the sound. Just know that you won't get the mirror shaking bass out of a 6.5 sub. You do get a good well rounded sound though.

I had the same thing happen and replaced it with a Kicker Comp VT, trust me it was worth the money.
