the gas cap is the easiest fix I have ever seen,
the Brakes are my pet peeve, they need to be perfect,
your tires are wider then the fender flares.............................so?
I'm so glad we don't haev stupid requirements lie tire size here in Va I hear they have emissions in Richmond, but that's kinda why I live in e South end of the state

Your brakes weren't equalized? in other words you had sticking calipers? O did somebody need a little money for his house payment?

I didn't think NJ had lawyers?
Old joke: Why does CA have all the lawyers and NJ have all the toxic waste? NJ got first pick.

Well, for once Illinois isn't so bad... They only have us do an emissions test, and for 97 or newer they only plug into the diagnostic port and read codes and sensor info etc... And that's only if you live in the northern part of the state near Chicago.
Another thing I learned about our system (at least this was true a few years back when I had my YJ) is that if you have a pre 97 Jeep and they have to do the running test of the engine - but you have 33" or bigger mud terrains, the guys at my inspection station couldn't get it to read the tire rotations due to the sidebiters /lugs - so they always just said screw it and skipped that (major) part, and did the gas cap check and other minor parts and passed me But then again, the inspections are free, so it isn't like they make money off of it.

I spent a couple of months in Berea Kentucky back in '88, I had a pos '77 Monty Carlo that wouldn't pass in VA, but in Kentucky it was a normal everyday car, the local cop[s made me take the expired Va insp sticker and city sticker off cause it would impede my vision if a squirrel ran across the hood. I know he was joking when he started laughing at the fact I was from Va.
Fla is the same way there's no state insp but Va has state insp's because (1) they can get money (2() if you fail the money to repair goes to the state (commonwealth) (3) if they didn't force a state insp here, there would be about 2 in 5 cars that would lose parts going down the road cause a lot people here don't care about tehir cars

And we are happy that we made the correct decision on that choice.

Wink Gone from Jersey

Wow, do your stories bring back BAD memories of New Jersey and all the crap that state dishes out...I lived there for 18 years and remember well the pricks at the inspection station(s). Maybe your new govenor will get some things straightened out. LOL on that! My Mom worked at the prosecutors office and had a window sign indicating "Official Business"....I could her car or Dad's pick-up (one time the trucks muffler was rusted off and the guy passed it, told me to "get it fixed") with the sign of course and get wizzed right thru... Doesn't matter where you are, it's who you know...
P.S. Governor Huckabee (AR) did away with vehicle inspection several years ago...
Good Luck to all those living in the Garden State!

Its not as bad as some make it sound . If you have no check engine light on and it fails for emission I have never seen it be anything expensive or difficult to fix . The brakes in particular the drum brakes on most any Jeep suck as the self adjusters don't work well which is pretty common knowledge so go over them if nothing more than adjusting them before you attempt . In Jersey we get laughed at by outsiders because of the fender flare issue something else you should know if for no other reason than reading the larger number of forums . Don't get me wrong I am not defending NJ just saying put a little effort in it before you go . Most of us have the better part of two years to prepare for it

Actually Gary, its not just Jeeps with drums, its any vehicle with drums. Here's what happens, the self adjusters get clogged with brake dust and anything else that can get in there, or they rust into place. If they rust into place its obvious they need to be replaced, BUT if all they are is clogged up with gook, cleaning them is enough, I use white lithium grease in ever self adjuster I fix, and I have found that grease keeps out more, junk and prevents rust better than anything else. All self adjusters will stop working before drum brakes need to be replaced.

But I don;t understand whats so bad about havering tire stick out past the fender well
