It appears that my fog light controls on my 05 unlimited 4.0L are not working. I understand that this failure is a common occurrence. Instead of replacing my turn signal control, I would like to wire them up to where I can toggle them on and off from under the dash. I'm not quite sure where to hook up the power to. What I mean is, the best or closest power source. I've read where some have done this, what type switch was used would be helpful too.
I forgot to mention I've got the fuse pulled so the fog light indicator on the dash won't stay on after the jeep has been shut down.
I was just thinking about how to hook up the fog lights and was wondering why I can't piggy back them to my head lights or parking lights. When one came on so would the other. I'm wondering if the fuse or relay would handle the extra load in either case?
I think that is probably I bad idea. I think the amps would be too great from both the fog lights and the lights. Best case scenario it blows the fuse, and no flames come shooting from under your hood.
Unless you're really comfortable with wiring your best bet is to breakdown and buy a new switch. To wire up your fog lights with a separate switch you would need to either splice into the existing wiring loom at the steering column or run completely new wiring including installing a relay. This could take a few hours or longer if you're not experienced. Rock auto has new switches for approximately $100 and it takes literally minutes to install. Good luck with whichever route you choose.
Rigging a new switch is easy, too. Just use the two wires that run to the multifunction switch. Route them to a toggle switch. You could even mount the new switch on the steering column cover.
If you decide to install a new switch altogether, the wires at terminal 13 & 14 on the multifunction switch connector are the ones you want. At least a toggle switch won't fail to the "on" position like the original design.
Thanks, that's good info. I saw a video of a separate switch being installed and it didn't look too hard. The thing is, a separate and a new multifuntional switch probably aren't too much difference in price but as you say, a switch won't fail in the on position.
