for the past few months i have had a horrible squealing sound that sounds like someone pulled a pigs tail uner the hood when i start the engine, but goes away 1-2 seconds later. i never hear a noise while driving, only while starting.
after using a hose next to each of the accessories and playing with an automotive stethoscope i figured out that it's the starter that's making the noise. my dad thinks that it's the starter gear not pulling back into the starter quick enough after the engine starts. i'm not holding the key in the START position too long, i let the key go as soon as it fires but that's when the noise starts.
now that i know what the issue is, how do i fix it? could it be something as simple as the starter solenoid, or would i have to disassemble the whole starter to clean?
i tried looking on a few web sites (autozone, advance, napa) but didn't see a solenoid listed anywhere so i'm hoping it's not a part that can't be changed on its own. i'd rather not replace the starter unless i have to.
any suggestions? anyone ever had something similar happen?
