Finally Got One! And now I have questions

Hey guys, I have been creeping around this forum a bit, and decided to join recently when I started searching for a Jeep. I have wanted one since I was about 8, but haven't been able to afford one until now. I looked around a bunch and found some very high mileage expensive Jeeps that were in pretty rough shape. However, I got extremely lucky and came across a cheap craigslist add that was posted this morning. I got to the guy first and now am the proud owner of an '01 Sport! with only 87k on it

Enough talk here are a few pics...

He had all the stupid fake diamond plate on it, so I got home and spent like an hour ripping it all off. This dude literally had it everywhere...

Can anyone tell me what kind of rear bumper/tire rack/basket is? I like it!

So, now I have a few questions since I am a total noob when it comes to Jeeps. (My DD is a volvo so they are extremely different. And yes yes i know I drive a volvo lol)

1) When I let the clutch out while sitting a light in neutral I get this rattling that comes from under the Jeep. I had a car with a bad throw out once but it rattled when the clutch went in...?

2) Any maintenance I should look at doing besides oil change and such. I pulled the plugs and they are new so that makes my life easier.

3) When I am in 1st and 2nd gear the Jeep whines pretty bad, is that normal with the lower gears or should I be worried about it. The while is RPM dependent.

4) I need new tires, the owner has three pretty worn bf goodrich mud whatever's on it, and one mismatched. What tires would you recommend me getting? I do like the look of the bf goodrich.

5) I have the DW from like 50 to 60 mph should I wait and see how a new set of tires balanced and an alignment does or should I look else where for issues?

Also any advice, teaching, criticism, or whatever would be great. I am sure I will be picking all you guys brains for as much knowledge as I can get!

Oh, by the way I am located in Northern VA, but go to school in tidewater VA so if anyone ever wants to meet up and shoot the shit I am always down!

Thanks guys!

As far as the rattle while in Neutral i would just start by poking around and seeing if anything is loose. put it in your drive way pull the ebrake and crawl around to try to pinpoint its location then go from there. My car used to have a loose heat shield that would rattle when the rpm's got low usually while in neutral or in reverse.

I dont know much about your other issues I'v heard bad u joints can cause the DW, could also be your mismatched tires which is not good if your in 4wd.

I have 31in BF Goodrich all terrain on my 01. They look good and dont require any modification.

I live in VA Charlottesville area. I bought my 03 sahara with 85k miles on it like 4 months ago. Just made a thread with some pics on it, it was bone stock now you can see i've lifted it and put some nice tires on it. Not sure about the mechanic stuff unfortunately but I can recommend BFG All Terrain tires. They are really nice and have a huge lifetime to them. around 40k miles before having to replace them.

You have an Nv3550 transmission and they are famous for making noise in neutral and nothing to worry about.
Get the tires then worry about DW.
Bfg at's are hard to beat and I would not run anything else.
Change the fluids in your front and rear diff just to make sure there is no water there.

Enjoy your ride!!!

Thanks for the quick responses guys. I just got back from cruising around and I really love this thing.

TexasT- is it just neutral that they are famous for making noise in or 1st and 2nd too?

Also looks like BFG AT's are something I will look into and hopefully they will take care of my wobble.

Creeper- very cool, I used to date a girl from school who was a Charlottesville girl. It's a cool town and I seem to be there pretty often. Maybe we can meet up sometime and talk jeeps.

BF AT's are a great lasting tire and are all around tire except in mud. They will gum up qick and you will be running on slicks real soon. Give a look at goodyear dura trac. I run the cooper stt's and they are a good tire and not loud.

The Neutral rattle is pretty normal. I don't mind it except when I'm in drive thru's and I feel like it's echoing all over the place but I've found if I push the stick fwd slightly then it stops.

You'll be very happy with 31's (for now )

Oh, and make sure you wave at all other Wranglers, even if they don't wave back

Welcome!

My .02 -on third set of BFG's-IMO best ALL AROUND tire-that being said if you plan on muddin' check out Duratracs - rebates and all might be more fiscally worthy.

Said you are changing oil-maybe should change all fluids? front rear diffs-tranny etc. as well as motor. Maybe flush the cooling-unless you KNOW the PO was real anal about servicing-probably wouldn't hurt to change everything (all fluids).

Rattle in nuetral-yeah it has been covered-1st and 2nd though maybe something to "watch" first I have heard of that one. My 04 5spd has 135k and no rattle in 1st-2nd.

And BTW WELCOME TO THE FORUM!!

X2 on the fluids. Lots here will have many opinions on such. The rattle is typically 'normal'. Does it sound like a bunch of marbles in a can? Well, that's normal and it's inherent with the drivetrain. If we're talking about the same thing of course...

The tranny whine might be related to fresh fluid being needed. If you don't know what the previous owener may have put in that tranny, pull it out asap. Replace with 75/90 Royal Purple Syncromax (Yes, the synthetic stuff). About 11 to 13 bucks / qt online. Crazy easy job, and worth every cent of piece of mind. You might need 3 qts.

Differentials are different. Dino (regular) gear lube is typically just fine there, but there's lots here to read through on that subject as well. But change em' out. If anything, all the work will just help you learn the jeep even quicker.

The transfer case is ATF +4, full synthetic. Valvoline, my choice. You'll need 2 qts.

Tire choice? Well, you made the best one. Excellent choice without any mods, ect.

Lastly, there are a lot of opinions around here and I'd suggest you learn who to listen to quickly. All my suggestions aren't mine - they're from the best of the best (moderators, etc) Enjoy the new ride. Looks quite nice.

1) When I let the clutch out while sitting a light in neutral I get this rattling that comes from under the Jeep. I had a car with a bad throw out once but it rattled when the clutch went in...?

Its hard to know where the rattle is acually coming from, saying under the jeep can mean alot of things, could be something loose, or could just be the normal noise. I had a loose heat sheild when i bought my jeep for a month it was rattling untill i decided to get my hands dirty and really find out what it was! quite ever sense i put a clamp around it.

2) Any maintenance I should look at doing besides oil change and such. I pulled the plugs and they are new so that makes my life easier.

Umm... with 87k there isnt much you can do, unless you feel like it is needed to flush all the fluids than go for it! good as new, these jeeps are pretty easy to deal with i think. If it aint broke dont fix it. Also maybe just inspect everything, drivetrain, engine, fluids ect.

3) When I am in 1st and 2nd gear the Jeep whines pretty bad, is that normal with the lower gears or should I be worried about it. The while is RPM dependent.
I have no idea.. maybe the belt is whining?

4) I need newtires, the owner has three pretty worn bf goodrich mud whatever's on it, and one mismatched. What tires would you recommend me getting? I do like the look of the bf goodrich.
BF goodrich all terrains are good! or whatever your enviorment calls for.

5) I have the DW from like 50 to 60 mph should I wait and see how a new set of tires balanced and an alignment does or should I look else where for issues?

I would get the set of tires, than balance and align. If you still have a DW than something could me wrong..

just my .02 cents. (anyone know where that saying came from?)

Your item 5), are you pretty sure it's death wobble and not just a shimmy or out of balance deal? I've noticed some mis-usage of the term "death wobble", which actually is when your front wheels start violently flopping from side to side and almost wreck you. Read the stickies on this forum and the "general" forum to learn all about it and watch the videos. Causes and solutions are well covered in the stickies.

Nice ride, good for you.

Gentlemen,

First off let me say thank you so much for the responses. I love how quickly and in-depth you all answer questions. It makes my life a lot easier and I am really starting to love this forum.

Warboomer- Already got the wave down. Even had a nice chat with a cute lady Wrangler who had a '97 on 33's... Thing looked sweet!

JP2611- I wouldn't call the noise I have in 1st and 2nd a rattle at all. Sounds more like a whine to me, but it goes away in 3rd gear and up. This is my first manual I have owned so it might just be that I am not used to the noises it makes?

Mudquest- Sounds awesome! I plan on draining and filling all of the fluids! Coolant included next month when I can head to my parents place and use the nice garage with all of my tools. Being halfway across the state working and going to school I only have an apartment here. Also thanks for the advice on what to look for on the forum!

Village Idiot- Thanks for your input. After reading the sticky I think you maybe correct. My issue is not that dramatic at all and feels to me like I had out of balance tires and the mismatch on brands and tread depth didn't help I am sure. I should get my Jeep back with new tires in just a few and I plan to go from there.

Thanks again!
