First Jeep, does this sound like a good deal?

Hi

I'm about to buy my first wrangler and have some questions about a local ad.

The Jeep will be used for around town driving and I am wondering if the following sounds like a good deal and is ok to be street driven.

98 Wrangler 6 cylinder, automatic, 55k miles, hard and soft tops, custom lift, 4.5 gears, lockers, 38" tires, Waran winch, Borla headers & exhaust, KN filter. Too much to list.
$5500 negotiable.

Thanks
Rich

Sounds nice... But ads like that make me think those are 55k hard miles... Def give it a look for yourself

Well, unless its a show jeep or the axles have been upgraded 38"s are way too big for the stock drive train. Also to fit 38's you need about 7+" of lift.. or special fenders... thus this thing might have been beat to crap. Go look and report back...

Before i bought my TJ, i had my mechanic check out the car for $50. He was able to find out how much the dealer bought it for at the auction from the VIN. Worthy investment.

Check the undercarriage. If it is clean and not all scraped up, buy it. Swap tires to 33s and drive it forever.

5k miles a year? The owner must have trailered this to every trail in the area. I agree with the above that he probably abused it. Howerver, 5500 is cheap...

Sounds cheap, I too had a mechanic check mine out, found stuff I'd never had found until it was too late like cracked exhaust manifold, improperly installed muffler and the cat was bad. That plus some other stuff added up to $1000.
As to the comment it may have been trailered everywhere, that's possible, also I just towed mine from Houston to Durango. When the transfer case is in neutral, miles aren't racked up on the odometer, it was the same in Durango as it was in Houston, 145,549

That's very cheap for a jeep like that. Kinda "too cheap"- check it out really well before you do anything. Just remember, you'll be pouring money into it if it's been messed up and that 5,500 will turn into a lot more.

Not the Jeep for around town driving. Sounds like its set up for off road. I'm guessing it would be somewhat beat for that price. Find something closer to stock for around town driving. Good Luck

Sounds great on the surface.. just check it out good and for that price you've got about 2,000.00 in mod money and you'd still be in the good.

ok so how about a 99 sahara with both tops auto, 130k miles, getting a "new" motor installed with 60 k on it, they want 6, looks to have 33's on it, havent looked up close but looks like no lift, just curious about that new motor, and I like the auto cause of my bad knee, so no griping there ha ha

I didnt ask, may stop by tomorrow, curiosity and all that, rather buy a cheap CJ to fix my broken one, but the boyfriend wants to get rid of his mustang GT and wants either a truck again or a jeep

I still like the first Jeep you mentioned. Sell the 38s and buy 33s and drive it until it disintegrates.

honestly if you really want it sure go for it but make sure its mechanically sound 5500 seems "too good to be true" but who knows as for all of the mods i would rather just find a nice almost stock jeep for a good price that i know won't let me down and build it myself so you know weather or not things were done correctly oh yeah and the custom lift i wouldent trust it unless i did it myself just my 2 cent
