First Post - New TJ (1st Jeep) Owner!

Hello everyone here!

So these past few months I've been researching forums once I'd decided it was long past due time I owned a Jeep. I was very torn between if I'd get an older TJ or a newer JKU, and even got to the point I'd put a deposit down on a JKU through ENCS (military sales).

Funny thing happened - friend of mine who owed me money from selling him a vehicle some time back randomly got ahold of me with a 'proposition'. He'd sell me his 2006 Sport X with 75k miles, which he'd just installed a new lift, wheels/tires (less than 1k miles), custom stereo system, winch, and hard top he'd purchased if I'd pay the difference in what he owed me vs cost of the Jeep. KBB on the Jeep came out to around 16.5k, which can't effectively take into account the mods he just had done... so I agreed on 17k price.

Owed = 12k
Agreed price = 17k
Balance paid = 5k

Total = I own a 2006 TJ title free now. Can't wait to drive her! I'm currently in Afghanistan until Feb, now I just have to figure out transport to get it from Portland to Denver... I don't foresee driving a TJ that far as a very fun trip from my reading....

Here's my new baby!

Congratulations! Nice TJ
Portland to Denver is about 1,300 miles, about 20 hours. Not that bad of a trip. Bring a buddy to share the driving.

Welcome to the Forum and nice job on the JEEP actually that wouldn't be that bad of a trip IMO...I have an '04 TJ that I have driven MANY highway miles in...it has 165K on the clock...only question/ possible issue....what size tires and what gears? With the lift and larger tires it MAY need a regear to perform like it did stock on the highway.

I am guessing here but that to me looks about 3-4" of lift on 32" or 33" inch tires. If it is a 5 speed would probably want 4.88s and I would guess regear at about $1500-2K..do you know if it is a Dana 44 rear axle or not? or Dana 35?

If you can get some more pics under the Jeep...we can probably help out a little.

Thanks!!

Talking to my friend, he didn't do anything to the gearing... he had it more of a take to the shore now and then Jeep and I doubt he did any research on gearing vs tire size. It has a 4" lift on it with 33" tires. As it's a Sport X, my guess would be it's geared at 3.07 with a Dana 35 rear/ Dana 30 front as it was completely stock when he picked it up. I doubt this thing has ever seen a trail, he only took it onto the shore the once when he took the pic, and it sits in his garage most of the time.

It's a 6 speed manual. I wouldn't intend on going any larger than 33's with the 4.0L anyways, so my plan was to have it regeared to 4.56. I'd love to swap in a Dana 44 front and rear and that would be my only holdup on spending the cash on regearing the stock axles.

I may start looking into shops in the Portland area (no sales tax!) to get some work done over the next 2 months before I return so it's ready for me once I'm back. Any recommendations from people in the Portland area on shops in regards to Axle work/gearing, etc?
