first winch.. question

just put on my new smittybilt bumper / winch and ive got a pretty n00b question lol, when im just driving around should I leave it in free spool or engage? or does it matter? seems like it would be better to leave it engaged because it keeps it tight, but im not 100%, thanks in advance!!

Keep it engaged. There's typically nothing in the manual that states what to do.

But, if you read the steps, the last thing is to wind it up. There's nothing that says to disengage after winding it up. So, keep it there.

I can think of reasons not to leave it free. Safety aspect of coming loose and winding up under your jeep before you can see it. I doubt it would happen, but, you know who Murphy is, right?

I keep light tension on it by hooking to the shackle on the front bumper.
It unspools easy when you disengage.
