I have been looking around for a muffler, and I think I want to get a flowmaster for my 97. My stock muffler is a little beat up and rusted and for some reason my friends are telling me it sounds like a Subaru. I looked at the banks monster, cherry bomb, but I like the way the flowmasters sound. I just want to know which flowmaster to get. I know the 40 is louder but how much louder is it in the cab, or would it even matter with the soft top flapping and T/A tires and music. I think the piping for it is 2.25. As far as possibly getting headers later on what are the best bet for that. I was shopping around for them and I found that the Banks Torque Tube and Rugged Ridge Performance Header seem to be the most popular.
i'd say to go with the banks catback, it brings the factory 2.25" pipe to a 2.5" pipe and its all stainless steel. they sell their headers with a 2.5" output. and you can get a high flow cat from magnaflow for around $100 to complete a full exhaust. i have the banks cat-back and magnafow high flow cat and it sounds much better with the high-flow cat, it keeps the tone nice and low, i like the sound better than the flowmaster sound, you can keep it quiet and if you want to here it you can give it a bit more gas.

I have only had the Delta 50 on my Jeeps so I can only comment on those, but I like them. I usually get 8-10 years out of the mufflers. The 50 is not so loud that it draws undue attention, but it definitely is an upgrade from the stock muffler. Mine is a 2.5" from the Cat back. I thought I wanted a 40 series, but I am glad I got the 50 series. Still sounds good without the added noise. Note that mileage or horsepower will not change even though I know all the charts say they will. I put on the Flowmaster because my stock one was rusting out.

I went to a mom-and-pop muffler shop and got the Flowmaster 40 installed for less than $120. Personally I love the throatier new sound on my Jeep, but that's an individual choice. As was my decision not to pay almost $300 for a cat-back system...
I went to a Midas shop to see what the prices were for the exhaust installation and they told me about $500. I think that was for the Flowmaster 40 muffler, a Magnaflow Direct Fit Catalytic Converter, pipes, and install.
Flowmaster 40 will be louder outside the vehicle and will also have much more interior resonance. Flowmaster 50 Delta Flow will have a deeper tone but won't be as loud as the 40 outside the vehicle (50 series is designed to be quieter than the 40 series). It will also have much less interior resonance. The Delta Flow mufflers are specifically designed to reduce the amount of interior resonance.
I had a Flowmaster 40 on my old truck...and it was really loud in the cab. My buddy had one on his YJ and it didn't rattle your teeth out, but it was pretty loud in the cab as well.
