Fluids tranny

Went to the dealer today to get some trans fluid for my AX15 tranny. They recommend Mopar 75W-90 API-GL-3 Gear lubricant. They charge 18 bucks a quart. I need 3.27 quarts as recommended. GL 3 seems hard to find. They were going to have to order it so I told them to wait on it. Is there anything I can get at napa, advance, or auto zone that is the same but cheaper a quart? Also the diff oil front and back, should I go synthetic or not.

1999 4.0 manual trans with 114000 miles

Thanks for the advice.

For that kind of money you can get royal purple full synthetic that is one of the best on the market, and it is superior to GL3, thats old standard, they are GL4 and 5 compatible.
Max Gear

Max Gear is recommended for use in truck and automotive front or rear differentials, manual transmissions and lower gear units of marine engines that specify use of an API GL-5 or GL-4 fluid. It is non-corrosive to soft yellow metals (brass, bronze, copper, etc.) and synchronizer safe
Max Gear is an ultra-tough, high performance automotive gear oil designed to provide maximum protection to heavily loaded gears while maximizing power throughout the drive train. Max Gear outperforms ordinary gear oils by combining the highest quality synthetic oils with Royal Purple’s proprietary Synerlec additive technology. Max Gear makes gears run smoother, quieter, cooler and longer without overhauls. Max Gear is formulated with a friction modifier additive – no additional additives are necessary.
Max Gear is available in the following viscosities: 75W-90, 75W-140, 80W-90, 85W-140 and SAE

Ok, do you have to order RP, or can you pick it up at any of the box stores? So GL 4 or 5 is safe to use. Why do some say limited slip and others do not? Are they compatible?

Don't run any lubricant in your transmission that says it is suitable for a limited slip transmission. Most GL-5 lubes are bad news for the AX15, only a small subset of synthetic GL5 lubricants are okay.

The good news is that Aisin, the AX5 and AX15 manufacturer, approved the use of a synthetic 10w30 motor oil which is essentially the same viscosity of 75W-90 gear lube.

That's good news and info. I have some mobile one synthetic already. If that's good to go, I'm happy. Thanks
