Found a HP 30

So i found a HP 30 on craigslsit. I emailed the guy and he said $50 and its mine. He dosnt know what gear ratio(im looking for 4.10's), he said the cherokee had a 4.0, and he dosent see a ratio tag on the diff. Is there a way he could tell without the tag? aslo anyotyher info on the axle would be appriciated. Should i look for a newer one?

It's 3.07, 3:55, or 3.73, the only way it could have 4.10 is if that Cherokee came with the 2.5L engine. And since it was likely an automatic, it would have had 3.55 or 3.73 depending on its model year.

Any of them are highly desirable, the newer ones without the vacuum disconnect for the passenger-side axle shaft are more desirable because they have the one-piece passenger-side inner axle shaft. The older HP axles with the vacuum disconnect have a large square box cast onto the passenger-side axle shaft.

Either is fine. If it's the older style, all you have to do is put a cover plate over the square box's opening and swap in a one-piece axle shaft. Plus replace the inner axle shaft seals.
