Found this hangin out inside my transfer case...

I found a donut looking metal object hangin out loose in my transfer case (np231) and cant figure out if it is a part of it or not. I took apart my transfer case after my 4x4 was making awful sounding popping and grinding noises. If someone could tell me if there is a 1/8" thick by 2" circular abject that goes inside the transfer case somewhere i would greatly appreciate it. I will take a pic if it helps.

PS- when i first found it in the transfer case after cracking the transfer case in half, it was covered in thick grime and tiny metal fragments. All my TC fluid was black when i drained it.

That is the magnet for picking up any loose metal shavings. yes - it does belong in there. There should be a spot where it sits in the bottom of the case near the pickup for the oil tube. Bottom center is what I recall.

That magnet has caused a lot of grief for a lot of Jeepers who discovered it while working on their t-case & couldn't figure out what it was or where it came from.

I'm sure that diagram came from the technical service manual published by Chrysler for every year TJ.

They are a must if you are going to do any kind of work on your jeep. Check ebay.
