Question four wheel drive

I have a 2001 Jeep Wrangler Sport with a straight inline 6. The four wheel drive indicator light was not working, so changed the switch. However, the only light that lights up is the part time light, regardless of whether you put it in 4hi or 4lo. Noticed that there is also full time and a 4lo lights on the instrument panel that still don't light up. Are they supposed too?

Don't worry about the full time. Mine doesn't either. Do a Google search, there is a big long explination about that. Hope that helps

No - the NP231 transfercase that is in your TJ is a "PART TIME" t-case. The dash was also used in other Jeep models like the Cherokee that had numerous other transfercase's that had these options.

That's what it is. "full time" would be all 4 wheels locked together.

No... full-time would be like All-Wheel Drive like with the Quadratrac transfercases where there is only a 4Hi and 4Lo option in the transfercase and never put into 2WD.

Sorry, thays what I was trying to say. The 4 wheels are locked together, always on, not like lockers.

"full-time" means you can use it all the time...dry roads, icey roads, gravel roads, all conditions.

part-time means you only get to use it sometimes....where you need slipping to occur between the front and rear axles...like gravel roads. You can't use it on dry high traction roads...hence it can only be used "part-time".

there's a big technical difference between the two, since both are mechanically different in the transfer case. In the context of the dash, the full-time t-case was the NP242. TJ's never got the NP242, but XJ's did. and since they both used the same dash, you got a non-functional idiot light.
