FR driveshaft lots of play is it normal?

I know something is loose in the drivetrain, much noise under the jeep. When under the jeep and I can easily spin my front driveshaft back and forth about 1/8 a turn while in gear. This does not seem normal. Are the bushings worn? Could it be the U-joint? Two u-joints went out on my 92 and both scared the shit out of me. 70,000 miles how do I tell if the u-joint is going. Thanks for any help.

So when you are in 4x4, you can turn the front driveshaft 1/8 turn? Is the play coming from your u-joints, or is it coming from the pinion/t-case input/output? If you can't hear or feel the u-joints moving, I wouldn't worry too much about it, eventually all drivelines get some play in them. Put your Jeep in gear sometime and push it, you will see the whole thing rock back and forth.

It was in 2wd when I was twisting the front ds and it feels like the play equal in both transfer case and front differential. The u-joints look and feel good. havent had it in 4wd in a while it just seemed like way too much play than would be normal. Ill keep on watching thanks for the response.

Some movement is going to happen in there. You'll know it's Ujoints if you can move it up and down and not just twisting it.

I think the ujoints are next to do it has 70,000 miles and a 3" lift. It just feels like there is too much play. The d/s does not move up and down at all in the front. Thanks for your reply, I guess i'll just wait and see.
