FRESH PROJECT (stock TJ)

Here's the deal. I JUST bought a 99 TJ sport. BONE STOCK. The suspension has never been touched. I want to lift it. I have never lifted anything before. I know for sure I want the (rough country 4" x-series lift). What other parts are important/necessary ? I know I need a SYE and cv drive shaft. Very unsure on how to install and what tools I would need to complete everything. Best combos of wheels and tire sizes and so on.

Before you jump the gun on the rough country lift I'd do a bit of reading on their products first. I had the 2.5" on my TJ and within a year it started sagging, and the shocks rode terrible. With a 4" lift you need sye and cv driveshaft, like you said, adj control arms to correct angles, extended brake lines, longer bumpstops, track bars, sway bars, etc.

^What he said, but almost all of that is included in the kit besides the CV and SYE.

I wouldnt recommend either one. Rough Country is cheap for a reason, its junk. (Go ahead and chime in RC fans, my RC 2.5 lift is now a RC 1.5 lift with blown shocks but I bought it for $80 so I'm not complaining). For the price your gonna spend on a skycrapper, youd be better off going with a quality lift such as OME. You'd get more enjoyment out of a good quality smaller lift. Unless your set on having a tall rig that rides like crap then by all means go for it.

Or check out the Zone 4.25 combo lift if your budget won't get you the OME.

not true and to the op dont let this scare you off from getting a 4"
lift, you should have everything in the kit necessary to run the xseries lift, the others mentioned above are ideal, but could conceivably break yer wallet since they are not absolute necessities to "drive" your rig lifted with said kit.

i myself bought a bare bones 4" zone kit, and eventually did all of the additions that rdock mentioned(and i mean all of them), but remember all those things can be done in time (since its a $2k upgrade) thas all im sayin

Well, I'm not going to get in the RC debate, I'm just going to say that for the money, it's not a bad kit. For someone who doesn't want to spend a ton of money, it's not that bad. You can get the kit cheap then upgrade it slowly when money allows.

That being said, why not look into the Zone 4.25" Combo Kit. It comes with everything you need to install it on your Jeep and have it run great. The kit includes a 3" suspension lift along with a 1.25" Bl and a 1" MML to correct your drive line angle. It runs about the same price as the RC and is an awesome lift kit.

You're right, you can def get by without some of those things. They are just ideal for a "properly" set up rig. And most of them come with the x-series. The quality of those parts just aren't the best, which is why I'm ditching my RC components that I had left over from a previous lift, once I install my new one.

MUCH appreciated advice on the lift. I checked out OME .. a little out of the price range. But zone makes one I like 4" TJ Suspension System J10/J11 .. Now for tires and wheels? I went into Goodyear and they showed me a set of 315/70r17 ... nice tires and Im willing to put em on .. just for wheels ? I cant really find any 10 in wide rims ? any suggestions ? would theses tires be too big for just a 4 in lift?

The 4.25 kit from Zone is better than the 4" kit from Zone. It has nothing to do with having a 1/4" more clearance. It is because 1) the kit includes a 1" mml to help relieve driveline stress and reduces the amount you need to drop the TC if at all without a SYE/CV and 2) the control arms from Zone are junk because they use standard bushing. Stock control arms are better because they are designed to twist relieving torque your bushings and control arm brackets. If you want better control arms than stock, look into arms that use JJs or DuraFlex joints.

I just bought the 4.25 .. cant wait for it to get here ... I plan on running goodyear duratracs .. 33x12.50 on procomp 15x10s with a 1.5 spacer .. think it will rub anywhere ?

I helped a friend install his 4.25 Zone. The hardest part is getting all of the old parts off (especially the shocks). Start prepping now with kroil or PB blaster to loosen them up. For wheels, if you plan on wheeling get 15x8 instead of 15x10 so you can air down more. 15x10 won't hold the bead as well. As far as if you'd rub would depend on the wheels backspacing.

Careful if youre talking about a wheel spacer. A lot of people have problems with them.
I like my skyjacker 2.5" kit with a 1" body lift. I run 33's no problem. I have the nitro shocks and rides better than my buddies ome. His is a 6.5" lift though
I have no problems with skyjacker, and theyre a reasonable, middle of the line price. Just my .02

reading through the instructions for the body lift portion .. seems rather difficult to do in my home garage .. any ideas for jacking it up and what not ?

A lot of people suggest using a block of wood to help jack it up and not damage anything. Do one side at a time, and don't completely tighten till you're done.

cool deal .. well the lift is in the mail along with the wheels .. deff running 33s on 15s .. surely will post pics of install along with final pics .. any other advice for installing will be much appreciated .. THANK YOU ALL FELLOW JEEPERS !!

I would definitely do some more research on lifts. I highly recommend anything else except Rough Country. I have had a RC 2.5" lift on for two years now, just about 15,000 miles (not my DD) and it sags terribly. To be honest it probably sits at about 1" of lift right now..maybe a little more if im lucky. You can see the front coil springs are literally smushed, just at normal ride height.
It's well worth it to save up a little bit more and buy a more durable, long lasting lift. Like others said previously Rough Country is cheap for a reason. Cheap products equal low quality parts, that will have to be replaced sooner than you expect.

Alright it's been a while since I updated y'all on what I went with ... zones 4 1\4 in combo lift. Pro comp 15x10 with -47 backspace debating on returning the 1.25 in wheel spacers (haven't installed them yet) went for the upgraded nitro shocks, quick disconnect links, and stabilizer. So far I have the body lift in along with the mml. Pretty simple. Suspension lift is tomorrow and maybe get the wheels on.

Just installed the zone 4.25 on my 99 TJ last weekend, it was very easy. The hardest part was putting the new relocation bracket in for the rear sway bar. Not much room to work with. The drag arm was a little tricky to disconnect from the pitman arm, if you lightly tap the pitman arm it should just fall right off( trial and error). Let me know if you have any questions, you will have to adjust your steering wheel it will be about 180 degrees out.

Yea the brackets a pain .. I took a grinder to the original bracket cause the rust was so bad .. my drill sucks and keeps dieing so thats where I stopped tonight .. can you upload pics of yours ?

Finally got the lift in .. between work and a 7 month old lol .. tires and wheels will be mounted on monday so it looks a little goofy ... also blacked out the chrome around the head lights lol .. im a chrome hater
